  1. Oookay, when it comes to music, Austria has much more to offer through the ages. Take Johann Strauss, composer of the 19th century (1800s). Operetten und Walzer 😊. Then the beautiful Vienna folk music from around 1900, Schrammelmusik. Named after the main composers, the Schrammel brothers. A very prominent "folk singer" of the early decades of the 20th century is Hans Moser. He also features as an actor in bw movies, famous for his tragic comedian and slapstick talent. And last but not least the Austrian mega popstar Falco, storming charts in the 80's. My generation who were teenagers in the 80's also remember popstars and bands like Rainhardt Fendrich, Tauchen & Prokopetz, DÖF, Hubert von Goisern and the hilarious EAV (Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung).

We Germans love Austrians. No matter how fierce we might deny it – on both sides. We love the accent, we love their humor and their weird tv crime series, Vienna Tatort, Kottan ermittelt,… we love the food, the beautiful skiing sites and breathtaking motorcycle routes.
We are like distant cousins hating and pranking each other. But if push comes to shove, Austrians are family 😊

PS: The language difference between German and Austrian German can be compared to the difference between Dutch spoken in the Netherlands, and Flemish, the Dutch spoken in the Northern part of Belgium. Same goes for the "love-hate relationship" between the Dutch and the Flemish people. Distant cousins with a grudge 😅

  2. Im not sure if thats actually a thing or if its personal but…
Groups of slow walking people that use all of the sidewalk.

Standing on the left side of the Escalator. (Left is for walking, right ist for standing)

Smalltalk with cashiers when someone else is in line.

Actually i think Austrians get mad over anything that slows them down in any way.

  3. Pleeeease annoy them about their bags. The entitlement they sometimes have, when they think their bags are more deserving of a seat than you are, is just wrong. I say this as an Austrian.

  4. our landscape culture… well take the text of our national anthem…. the first 3 lines are landscapes….

Land der Berge, Land am Strome,
Land der Äcker, Land der Dome,
    Land der Hämmer,

country of mountains, country of rivers,
country of fields, country of cathedrals,
country of hammers (well thats more about our pride of craftsmanship) 🙂

  5. For the ones of you who can speak German:
Don’t miss out to use some Austria specific vocabulary.
A nice example where also most Germans annoy Austrians in Coffee Houses is using "Schlagsahne" (Whipped Cream) instead of "Schlagobers". 😂

  6. Coming from Australia, I spent a week in Kärnten in 1999 (to meet at a big car meeting) and I really enjoyed my jaunts through the countryside. I didn't like the loud parts of the car meeting and it seemed, nor did the locals.
My visit was a followup to my 1968 visit to a different part of the country as a (West German) lad for whom no mountain was too high.

  7. about the seat thing: you are supposed to ask politely if the seat is free, and they are obliged to make it free. If they don't you either sit down on their stuff or get the train guy. There is a reason why trains have this extra shelf for luggage above the seats.

  8. Austrian here. Don't believe people who say we don't like tourists. I do and I know lots of people that do. Just don't compare us with germany, don't stand on the left side od the escalator in vienna, and don't be taken back by some rude viennese folk. That's just how we are, but in reality we are really nice.

  9. As an austrian i can tell you:

    – don't order Schnitzel with sauce

    – don't block whole streets with your big tourism groups

    – care where you walk. Can't tell how many tourists ran into me keeping focus on their cameras. Yes, our cities can be beautiful but pls don't act like you the only ones there

    – austrians hate to get filmed in public areas all the time. Pls enjoy the view, the architecture but stop holding your cams under peoples noses. Our old towns are mostly kinda cramped with people, so heads up and enjoy.

    – don't misinterpret waiters/waitresses for not being friendly. Its just how we are – short-mouthed, kinda stressed but welcoming.

    – on freeways, don't always drive left side or middle side. If you can, you are to drive on the right side so you don't block the traffic. It happens all the time with foreigners driving thru austria and don't care about the rules.

    – never expect austrians behave themselves the same in every part of the country. We have massive differences from west to east. We're small but a country with various dialects, social togetherness, etc. "Wiener" are different than "Salzburger", as well as "Steirer" are different to "Tiroler". We can appear cold and strange but thats mostly based on the horrendous english we speak countrywide.

  10. I love when someone says ( oh does Austria have kangaroos?) but I hate it when someone says ( Austria is just Germany)

  11. I slightly disgree on the bag thing. Most people traveling to and from work during the rush hour have the common sense not to put their bag next to them and the ones who do will remove it without any passive aggressions whatsoever. In all my years in Vienna I never had that negative experiance in this regard.

  12. The worst thing a tourist could do is to compare/misstake austrians with germans. A not so small number of us can`t stand germans. We have a saying here: "Germans want to understand us austrians but can´t, we austrians can understand the germans but don´t want to" 😂

  13. 😵‍💫 When I heard the introduction, I almost fell off the couch. But the video is still very interesting and great!!!! ❤ Greetings from Austria, Nicole
