The Philippines is my favorite country in the world and I have been here more than 75 times. There is truly nothing like the Filipino spirit, their unparalleled warmth, and genuine hospitality. However, beneath this beautiful exterior lies a reality that cannot be ignored: the severe poverty in Manila. With over 40% of the city’s 23 million residents living in slums, the conditions they endure are among the most challenging in the world.

In this episode, I venture deep into the heart of Manila’s largest and most impoverished slum called Tondo. Here, I discover a community living along a heavily polluted bay and directly beneath the constant bustle of a busy highway.

Despite the heart-wrenching circumstances, the individuals we encountered are nothing short of incredible. Their stories and resilience are both inspiring and humbling. Through this journey, I hope to shed light on the incredible strength of the Filipino people and offer a glimpse into their daily lives. Join me as we uncover the true spirit that makes Filipinos the most resilient people in the world

More to come soon from the Philippines – I would love to hear from you in the comments down below on this story.

  1. There are a lot of positive stories to share about the Philippines, which I’ve been doing since 2017 and will continue to do so because I love this country. But this one in specific is a story that I felt needed to be shared – thank you for watching and I look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments! 🙏🏼🇵🇭

  2. You do know you were eating "recycled" fried food, right? Restaurants threw away that food which slump food stalls "salvaged" and recooked into what you were eating!

  3. such mixed feelings watching this. Feeling guilt for living in US wanting to earn more even though I live comfortable and they got welcome signs at the top of their home entrance and that one guy apologizing for his home but then saying 'as long as we're happy'. Wow. I've only been to Cebu and surrounding areas. I'm filipino/american so I feel so indifferent at times when I see this. Thanks for sharing. I hope they are all healthy and okay. I know the smell of poverty is like no other in the world. and brave exploring those places.

  4. Our country, The Philippines is in bad shape bec THE LEADERS THEN & NOW ARE JUST HELPING THEMSELVES. It was once a thriving country before the Marcos regime…twas said that the economy surpassed that of Singapore ….😢✌️

  5. While it's true that they are living in poor, dangerous place and drowning in poverty, some of them are professional squatters who are given government housing, only to sell it and squandered the money 🤑 on drugs, alcohol, gambling and other vices. then comeback to slums again. being rich is also a mindset and big chunk of luck but poverty is a big chunk of misfortune and a little wrong life choices.

MGA HINDI NA NGA NAGBABAYAD NG AMILYAR PERO NAKAPAGTATAYO NG MGA MATATAAS NA BAHAY O MGA BATO PA YUNG IBA PERO HINDI MO MALAMAN KUNG MGA TITULADO LUPA O SQUATTER LANG AT GINAGAWA PANG INIDORO MGA WATERWAYS, SINISIRA MGA IMPRASTRAKTURA AT MGA TALAMAK SA PAGGAWA NG KRIMEN!!!!

  8. daming magaganda sarat ilong pa kinuha mo.. my wife is better good looking than what you got Sir. kaung mga foreigner hilig talaga sa mga exotic animals.

  9. I need to improve my skills as a videographer here in Myanmar to tell the stories of the people here. I do film similar content but I don't have the skills yet to tell a good narrative so I look and learn. Thank you Drew for giving eyes and a voice to people the world does not see. I try to do the same here even if my skills are poor. I try and show the work of Jochen for Myanmar and Sonne. It would be really great if you came to Myanmar and did a story on Sonne as I know you care for Myanmar. Thank you Drew.

  10. A nobody can not bring hope, you can not change human nature by presenting a good hearted mindset. If you wanna change something, you have to go above and beyond your own nature. Making videos to make people awer does not change anything. Your only giving yourself praise for "noticing" them and making other people notice them. If you want change to happend, make the viewers experience the same issue as harsh as the poorest people on earth and then they will come together and change things. Or become a greedy selfish narcissistic money hungry company owner and when your at the peek of your pinnacle, then make the drastically change and help the poor people at the bottom of the slums.

  11. Me deixa tão triste e feliz ao mesmo tempo, um povo que sofre tanto mas que ao mesmo tempo é tão resiliente, tão sorridente mesmo apesar dos pesares .

  12. is sad that they are surviving, the system is cruel, people have no dignity , i know they are hard working, but is humanly necessity, have a safe place to sleep, have clean water, so sad

  13. Nakakahiya that some foreginer is the one taking action when in reality it should be governments to provide equally access basic needs like food water shelter etc.
