GERMANY’S RICHEST TOWN?! VAN LIFE TRAVELS | BLACK FOREST | BADEN-BADEN

Vanlife in Germany’s Black Forest continues as we take our campervan deeper into this beautiful region for more travel adventures. This week, we find ourselves hiking through some quintessential Black Forest landscapes with the epic Allerheiligen waterfalls and abbey ruins, and debate the all-important question: Instant Mash, yay or nay? We then head to the luxurious playground for the rich and famous (allegedly), the pretty but hella pricey town of Baden Baden. If you love your boutiques and fancy restaurants, you’re onto a winner: as long as your wallet is bulging. But away from that, you’ll find exquisite buildings and some incredible public parks to enjoy. Naturally, we lower the tone with a can of beer and a bench. But hey, that’s not so bad here, and besides, have you seen the price of the bars?!

Elsewhere, we sample a drink we keep seeing everywhere in Germany: Aperol Spritz. But does it taste as pretty as it looks? Well….

  1. Mobi Reception: plenty places in Scotland that don't have good phone reception, so totally get that. A lot is to do with sheer lack of investment by phone companies.
Air Con: buy a cheap, hand-held fan, OR there is a device you can wear round your neck, they're like headphones, but inside, are 2 fans and you can have cooler air circulating about your neck. A more technical one is to immerse your wrists in cold water somehow/somewhere which WILL reduce your body temperature, also ankles – where yer veins are far more exposed.

  2. Not to be too cheeky, between going up, going down, and going straight, there is probably just one option Stephen would approve of. Love and respect your take on life and reflections. You really are very lucky and it's always so enjoyable to watch your videos of your adventures. You seem to have had good luck with the weather (apart from a very few exceptions) but then that would be the upside about travelling in a Daisy.
Baden Baden does look a bit Mediterranean, but being so close to France you can probably smell the posh baguettes I'm not surprised.
Aperol spritz is mixed 3-2-1 parts prosecco, aperol, and soda (mineral) water. I like sweet more so try the aperol spritz with a bit of Sprite instead of soda water.
And if you want to try another German weird but popular drink, try mixing your own Diesel drink: 1 part coke topped with 1 part beer (pilsner type is preferred I guess). Germans are fond of mixing their beer with weird flavors. Last time at a Bremerhafen Christmas market I tried Glรผhwein and beer mixed. Not my idea of a good combo.
    Cheers from Skรฅne!

  3. Are you slopping on the sun tan cream? I remember years ago, in Puerto de La Cruz, we were warned to still slather it on, despite cloud cover, as the sun is so strong it can penetrate clouds. (SLIP-SLOP-SLAP – Slip on a Top, Slop on the Cream, Slap on a Hat).

  4. Another pleasant wander in Germany. BTW, nothing wrong with instant mash and gravy at any time of the day or night – with some peas preferably.

  5. Lived in Baden Baden for over a year, one of our cats was born there. 22:56 across the street is where I got married! There are very nice places to go: museums, the old castle and the black forest. The best is the Italian ice cream shop near that fountain, recommend the spaghetti ice cream. Baden Baden is really a spa town with many casinos, if you want to lose thousands. So geared toward those with ยฃยฃ.

  6. Howdy Guys!! I can relate to Stephen's walking issues with walking well. My entire lumbar region of my spine has been damaged & some days, I'm lucky to be able to walk around the house! Have the best time making memories boys!!! Big bear hugs from Kenny in Ohio, USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜›๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿคช๐Ÿ˜

  7. I am enjoying your honest insight into The Black Forest. I actually live in the Black forest and it is very different to living in the UK. You can legally drink beer and wine at 16 here but 18 for spirits so they spread it out and yes, they love their beer!! … Aperol, not our thing!! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I haven't actually been to Baden Baden yet can you believe and was only researching it yesterday ! Mnay footballers live there and from what I understand it is a Cheshire equivalent. Looking forward to next week!

  8. Instant mash with gravy – 100% yes! And a mash sandwich? You've got to try it, it's seriously the best. Your epiphany on life is so beautiful. I always enjoy hearing your thoughts. But seriously, black while running? Tut tut!โค have a lovely beer and 6 and enjoy ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. Totally agree with Steven over the beers on how the brits don't know how to limit themselves

  9. Nice video as usual! Instant mashed potatoes was a big part of my childhood. My mother didnโ€™t like to cook ๐Ÿ˜‚ Itโ€™s so interesting regarding cultural differences regarding drinking beer in public sitting on benches. Here in Sweden one would think that you had problem with alcohol. It would be fun and interesting with a Q&A ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

  10. Chocolate ๐Ÿซ Yes any time snack ๐Ÿ˜Š
Mash potato on a whole meal not a snack at midnight ๐Ÿค”
Loved this hike it had so much to see & explore on it. Loved the water falls.
Best bit it was Free ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿค—

  11. Like New York New York? BB does have beautiful parks. I do sometimes crave mashed potato but instant has too much dairy for me. Sausages onions mashed spud and gravy sound good. Steve should try to kick that sugar habit, its more harmful than it seems. Great travel series fellas. Now back to work. ๐Ÿฅณ

  12. Howdy Again Boys!! You guys deserve a bigger motorhome! A nice RS rig with all the bells & whistles!! Wish I could sponsor one for the two of you! It's a little $400K. I think that you guys would just love it!! Every goal starts with an idea or a dream!! Big bear hugs from Kenny in Ohio, USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Noooooo to instant mash
Sorryyyyyyy loved it when I was little,
    if I remember rightly
Adore you guys, of course. You always give me smiles That bottle of Pepsi /coke
they saw Steve coming ๐Ÿ˜‚ bless him
    Stay safe lovelies ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒž

  14. Aperol is Italian it's drunk as aperitivo after work and served with snacks for no extra charge. So you probably need an Italian for the authentic recipe.๐Ÿ˜‚

  15. Smash is the best mash remember the robots lol idaho mash is our new fav and having a beer on a bench is different there as you and people are enjoying it not causing issues and not downing 15 cans at a time like you see in UK lol all the best guys donny

  16. Lovely episode, enjoyed the park bench scene, made me think of Steinbeck's characters philosophizing over a quarter of red wine. Also, as a fellow north european I enjoy watching you suffer in the heat so don't stop bringing that up

  17. Yes, for instant mashed potatoes. I've just had some, leftovers from last night, with frozen veg cooked with it and chicken cooked in the air fryer.
Instant mash doesn't go off, if kept dry, unlike potatoes that grow eyes or go mushy with age.
Maybe you have to stir that drink so you're not tasting the layers before the booze? Just a thought. ๐Ÿ™‚
    Cheers.

  18. Yes to Idahoan mash! But we only buy it when on sale ๐Ÿ˜‚ and then buy loads ๐Ÿ˜‚. Thanks again for making our Sunday mornings fun! โคโคโค PS my brother adds regular pasta to his sauces, adding extra water with stock cube and simmers for 10 minutes with lid on. He told me today, after watching our spag bol video ๐Ÿ˜‚. We haven't tried it yet ๐Ÿ˜‚.

  19. I always look forward to your videos and this one didnโ€™t disappoint either. Very interesting to see Baden Baden – lovely buildings. Beautiful park and countryside. It was a bit of a surprise to see the ruins of the abbey – donโ€™t expect to see them in Germany for some reason – more common here in the uk. Thanks for sharing – only another week before we get to see where you will be next time. Stay well and safe.

  20. Idahoan mash is very nice as a stand in! I use it sometimes as a thickening agent in soups and stews . Germany has proven to be very beautiful and I really have enjoyed seeing it with you xx

  21. Instant Mash! When we lived in a house it was a big NO. Not that we didn't like it, but why have instant when you can buy potatoes at the market for a fraction of the cost and it definitely tastes better… However since living on the road in Perse instant mash has become a regular for both of us. So much easier.

With regards to alcohol, we found that most mainland Europeans don't have the same relationship with alcohol. Drinking to excess doesn't really happen (excluding the legal required village drunk) so having a social drink in the park is considered very normal.

We agree on Baden-Baden, not one that's being added to our list.

Much love Darren & Alison ๐ŸคŸโ™ฅ๏ธ

  22. Lovely video and good that you can live in the moment and appreciate the lifestyle you have. Letโ€™s hope you can carry on as long as youโ€™d like to. ๐Ÿค—๐ŸšŒโค๏ธ
