Burg Ehrenfels | Castle | Bird Eye View of Rhein Gorge | 4K
Join us as we visit the picturesque ruined hillside fortress overlooking the Rhine Gorge – Ehrenfels Castle (German: Burg Ehrenfels). It is near the town of Rüdesheim am Rhein in Hesse, Germany. Perched on the steep eastern bank of the river, it is surrounded by expansive vineyards. The grape variety Ehrenfelser is named in honor of this historic castle.
This medieval castle was crucial to the region’s history, strategically positioned to control shipping and safeguard trade routes along the majestic Rhine River. Despite its importance, the castle faced significant challenges, enduring damage during the Thirty Years’ War and eventually being destroyed by French troops in 1689. Today, Burg Ehrenfels stands as a testament to its storied past. It has become a beloved tourist attraction and a youth hostel, inviting visitors to step back in time and explore its fascinating ruins.
The ruin can be reached from Rüdesheim via a hiking trail through the vineyards. The interior however can only be visited in guided tours by prior appointment.
