The highest hill of Istanbul is Aydos Hill with 537 meters. Aydos Castle and Aydos Hill are located in the Sultanbeyli district of Istanbul, the city of history, tales and legends. The castle was built during the Eastern Roman Empire. It has been built in the 11th and 12th centuries and named “Aetos” (Αετός), meant “eagle” in Greek. This Byzantine castle, was the second important point that the Ottomans conquered in Istanbul after Kandıra. Since this place was located on the highest hill, it was also a difficult fortress to conquer. Conquer of the castle by the Ottomans was happened during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Orhan Gazi, approximately towards the end of the 13th century.

Aydos Castle, after being hidden in the forest for hundreds of years, was first revealed thanks to the excavations started in September 2010. The works were completed in 2022 and the castle was opened to the public visit.
