A Charming Stop in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence!
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a picturesque town in southern France, nestled at the foot of the Alpilles mountains. Known for its rich history and cultural significance, it was the home of Nostradamus and the place where Vincent van Gogh created many of his iconic works during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. The town’s historic center features narrow, winding streets lined with traditional Provençal houses, charming stone buildings, and beautiful squares. Its Romanesque Saint-Martin Church and the Renaissance-era Hôtel de Sade add to its timeless appeal, making it a quintessential Provençal destination.
Les Antiques is the name given to two prominent Roman monuments located just outside the town. These are the Mausoleum of the Julii and the Triumphal Arch:
Mausoleum of the Julii: This stunning structure dates back to around 40 BC and is one of the best-preserved mausoleums from the Roman world. It was built by the Julius family to honor their deceased members. The mausoleum features a rectangular base with relief carvings depicting various scenes, including battles and mythological figures. Above this base, a circular colonnaded structure holds statues of the deceased, topped by a pyramidal roof.
Triumphal Arch: Adjacent to the mausoleum is the Roman Triumphal Arch, dating to the early 1st century AD. This arch once marked the entrance to the ancient city of Glanum. The arch is adorned with intricate reliefs, including depictions of captured Gauls, symbolizing Roman victories. Although the top of the arch has been lost to time, its grandeur remains impressive.
