Check out Day 2: August 10th 2019:
***UPDATE:
Update: As of 11pm August 10th Shanghai time the conditions are unchanged. I received a comment from a viewer who lives in Suzhou just south of Shanghai and says that they are currently in the eye of the storm and that the wind has stopped. Suzhou is about 114 km west so it should be in Shanghai soon.
As of 8am August 10th Shanghai time conditions have not improved. Varying light to heavy rain and wind and blowing debris. The streets are coved in leaves, branches, trash, and lost umbrellas. Some larger tree branches have been torn off and some local restaurants have lost some tables and chairs. These are some of the conditions from my very brief walk around downtown this morning.
**Update: August 10th. I was very lucky today and had a near miss. I was near Nanjing Pedestrian Street and a large decorative metal sign cap (weighing about a kilo) was ripped from its mount from the sign and fell about 5 meters and crashed to the ground about 3 meters in front of me as I was running through the rain. Im very thankful that no one was there including myself because it could have done some damage from that height. I wasn’t all lucky though. I was hit by a busted runaway umbrella in the leg and received a small cut and I cut my thumb in a tug of war match between myself, the wind, and the sharper metal bits of my umbrella. Both very minor. Between an umbrella attack or a falling bit of metal I’d choose the umbrella any day.
**To clarify: This video is just the edge the typhoon. Typhoon Lekima hadn’t officially reached Shanghai yet when I filmed this video. The typhoon wasn’t supposed to fully reach Shanghai until several hours after I filmed this. However, as Im writing this it’s still on its way and I can hear the heavy winds and rain outside my hostel.
***Also please note that a typhoon is no laughing matter, its very dangerous. When I shot this video, however, almost everyone was having a good time on the Bund and having a good laugh and playing in the wind. In the video I joke around a bit so please don’t take offense because overall it is a serious matter. The full typhoon hasn’t yet arrived and this afternoon in Shanghai was an enjoyable experience for most on the Bund.
I just arrived today in Shanghai and Typhoon Lekima is close behind. I went for a walk on the Bund to see the storm coming in and got soaked in the process of filming. I apologize for the video and sound quality. It was very difficult to keep my camera dry, hold an umbrella in the wind, and film at the same time.
