This ancient fortress city is one of the most spectacular in Europe. A small city is actually contained within the walls. The most important sights include:

Cite Medievale
The site has a 2500 year military history including domination by Gallo-Roman, Visigoth, Saracen &Frankish lords. Neglected for centuries it was largely restored in the
mid -1800s under the supervision of Violette-le Duc.

Basilique Saint-Nazaire
Constructed around 925 AD and blessed by Pope Urban II in 1096. Romanesque design was gradually replaced with Gothic components from 1269 to 1330.

Chateau Comtal
Surrounded by an additional system of fortifications within the walled city, the core Chateau once stood alone as the fortress. Violette-le Duc’s restoration designs included
the reconstruction of timbered elements, which can seldom be seen in other fortresses.
