The St Cuthberts Way | 62 Miles From Melrose to Lindisfarne

I walked St Cuthbert’s Way self-guided with Trash Free Trails and Macs Adventure, who have been organising walking and cycling holidays for over 20 years. The 62 mile route is an absolute classic, travelling from Melrose in the Scottish Borders, to Lindisfarne (also known as Holy Island) in Northumberland.

This film is part of Trash Free Trails’ ‘Purposeful Adventures’ campaign. At the heart of the ‘litter issue’ is widespread disconnection from nature, so TFT are encouraging us to ‘get out to go in’ this summer, deepening our relationships with the natural world through adventure, and giving back to the places we visit.

Also worth noting, is that all of Macs itineraries are tried and tested and allow travellers the freedom to go their way, at their own pace, with accommodation booked in friendly B&Bs and local hotels. They provide a handy app with GPS routes that can also be downloaded for offline use, and each morning, your luggage is transported to the next accommodation, so you can fully enjoy the day’s adventure.

  1. Hi Abbie. I absolutely love your videos. I’m 75 years old now and still out there as often asI can but LDPs are beyond me now. So I follow your adventures and recall my own. 🙏🙏🙏

  2. Know that you have many friends and allies out here who may look so ordinary and traditional, on the outside. We all need to support and help each other on life's roller coaster journey. Glad to see another walking adventure on your channel!

  3. With your drone, please be careful not to harass wildlife or nesting birds. I'm sure that's on your radar. I've seen too many Youtubers who have done so, causing herd animals to run, or disrupting birds sitting on nests. thank you.

  4. Again Abbie it was a pleasure to share your walk. Each one gets better and must admit I was also feeling nervous as you crossed the sand but what a joy to see your smile when you got to the island. Fantastic walk and beautifully filmed 😊

  5. Brilliant video as always Abbie, you looked so happy throughout and it looked like a fantastic walk. I always enjoy watching your videos already can’t wait till the next one 😁 keep doing what your doing! You continue to inspire me with your adventures 😊

  6. Re the swaling – Native Americans also used to burn the great prairies of the midwest United States, to ensure that the land stayed in prairie. The trees try to grow up but most species are held back by this technique. The bison were the goal. I realize today's hunts in England are about sport not a food source.

  7. Really loved the video. After some health issues it inspired me to get out and do a proper walk for the first time in weeks. I felt much better for doing so. It was good to see a trail done using Baggage Transfer and B+B’s. For a lot of people this means that these trails are do-able. My wife and I are in our 60’s . The days of camping are long past . With the sort of arrangements you made these trails are still possible for us. Thanks again.

  8. Welcome back to walking! 😊 Thank you for yet another beautifully produced and very enjoyable film. Well done for keeping going across the tidal beach. I hope the free mudbath was worth it 😊

  9. Your film making skills are incredible. I have thoroughly enjoyed walking along beside you on this trail. Your passion for the outdoors is infectious and it makes me want to get out and soak up some scenery. Good to see you so happy and back out having adventures.

  10. Hi Abbie. I look forward to all your videos, and especially enjoy your full length films. You always inspire me to get out and walk. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you as happy as this – so pleased for you. Keep up your amazing walk. Lots of love from a 62 year old grandma in Melbourne, Australia.

  11. It's lovely to have a new full length film to watch and it was so upbeat and happy! You look really comfortable and it's wonderful to see.
Regarding the bracken, I once heard that bracken is normally a woodland species where the shade from the trees stops it from taking over. So when you're imagining how a landscape used to look, replace swathes of bracken with woodland. It just shows how much our landscape has changed. Also Himalayan balsam does provide insects with nectar but its a fast growing, shallow rooted annual which swamps british natives. When it dies over winter, there's no roots left to keep the soil in place and prevent erosion.

  12. Bless you sweetheart ❤ I’m 62 and watch all your vlogs , you look so happy in yourself in this vlog, love you ❤( like a daughter of course. 😂) xx

  13. Thanks for this video Abbie, just what I needed today . 1:28:00 I've crossed a lot of railway lines on trail, but never had to phone a signaller. I also had to walk on a railway line in the highlands when I got VERY lost

  14. Love this. Had a lovely evening to myself the day it came out so sat back and relaxed. On the shortlist for a future walk for sure – either on my own or with my 13 year old daughter, who has the hiking bug. Herriot Way this year and have started planning the Cumbria Way next year. ❤

  15. Its nice to see you back on the trail again Abbie, and its very close to 60 Years since I first entered Kirk Yetholme on my first of two Pennine Way Hikes. I wish you Happy Hiking along the St Cuthberts Way. Sadly I can no longer get out an about in the Hills my knee joints would not take the pounding due to too many previous hikes, (two Pennnine Ways, 2 Coast to Coasts, 2 John O' Groat to Lands End, and a Complete Coastal Circut of Great Brittian and many more) but I wish you Well. Tony in Essex a 68yr old Ex Hiker of Long Distance Routes

  16. Really enjoyed the video some great photography, but was a bit disappointed you flew the drone over the Lindisfarne nature reserve – especially when you showed the no drones sign at 1hr 31.16 .
Flying drones over SSSI’s and National nature reserves scaring wildlife / birds is never a great idea.
But glad you enjoyed your walk.

  17. It was great to see you doing this special film, smiling that smile, and looking well and happy, despite your many challenges. Thank you for all you do for the world, Abbie!
