Wine Tasting in Herzegovina

►Read the blog:

If you’re visiting Mostar and you have some time, I recommend you head to some nearby towns in Herzegovina to go wine tasting. Sitting at the crossroads of Eastern and Western cultures, modern Bosnia and Herzegovina is producing some impressive wines from this southern region.

Herzegovina primarily produce the red, Blatina and the white, Zilavka. Blatina can produce dry red wine with 12 – 13.5% alcohol. It has a dark ruby red color and is ages in both stainless steel and oak barrels. Zilavka is a white variety and is mostly found in Herzegovina, but once was planted throughout Yugoslavia. Vilavka is known for its nutty flavors. They also have producer anther red called Vranac.

The first winery we visited was AG Winery in Medjugorje. A family winery that is currently in its 3rd generation. They produce over 50,000 bottles of wine each year. During our visit we tried a many Zilavka’s and Blatina’s. Some had been aging for a few years in barrels and others were new wines.

Next we head south to Trebinje, to Vukoje Winery and Cellar. This winery is ranked #1 in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the top wineries in South Eastern Europe. They produce mainly Zilavka and Vranac. It total they produce 22 different types of wines and use four different types of barrels (French, Portuguese, Slovenia and American). You should visit the winery and have lunch on the 6th and 7th floor where you have an incredible view of Trebinje.

If you’re in Mostar or Dubrovnik I recommend you head to both of these wineries to get a taste of Herzegovina!
