The scenic drive from Chamonix, France, to Lausanne, Switzerland, offers an array of changing landscapes as you travel through the heart of the Alps. Starting in Chamonix, nestled at the base of Mont Blanc, you head northwest toward the Swiss border on the A40. Early June brings mild temperatures and blooming meadows, with lingering patches of snow on the highest peaks. The route takes you past the village of Passy, with views of the Fiz mountain range, before reaching the border near Saint-Gervais-les-Bains.
As you cross into Switzerland, the road becomes the A9, known for winding through alpine valleys and forests. This stretch offers views of the Rhône River as it meanders through the valley, and on clear days, glimpses of the distant Dents du Midi range. Small Swiss villages like Martigny dot the landscape, known for their vineyards on terraced hillsides. Here, the road follows the Rhône toward Lake Geneva.
As you approach the lake, the terrain opens up, offering sweeping views of the lake’s northern shore, framed by the Jura Mountains in the distance. Vineyards of the Lavaux region, a UNESCO World Heritage site, line the slopes descending toward the water. The drive continues along the lakeshore, passing towns like Vevey and Montreux, known for their cultural heritage and lakefront promenades.
Finally, the road leads into Lausanne, a city perched on the shores of Lake Geneva, with views of the Alps behind. The journey, approximately two hours without stops, combines alpine scenery, lakeside beauty, and historical towns, making it an ideal route for those looking to explore the natural and cultural richness of the region.
