Essential Japan Updates | 7 New Things to Know Before Traveling 2024

Japan has recently faced several challenges impacting travel, including currency fluctuations, scams, and natural disasters. The yen’s appreciation, after a period of depreciation, could affect travel costs for international visitors. Meanwhile, the anticipated return of Suica, a popular IC card, signals recovery from supply issues caused by a semiconductor shortage. However, the rise in unauthorized cab operations, known as “Shirotaku,” poses risks for tourists. Additionally, Japan’s earthquake-prone nature underscores the need for vigilance, especially following recent severe earthquakes. These issues highlight the importance of staying informed when traveling in Japan.

  1. I completely agree that there is something very strange about suspending the sale of regular Suica cards that last for 10 years, while continue selling Welcome Suica cards that are only valid for 28 days. If chip shortage was the reason, why sell cards that can't be reused after 28 days?

  2. Not cool for foreigner Peruvians to start acting like it’s a free for all like a Latin country Japan is draconian in its law and order and will stamp this type of chaotic immigrant behavior out immediately. Social cohesion is the only thing Japan has

  3. I want to travel to Japan again, but I'm worried because on February this year I was refused entry (nothing on my passport), only not to land notice. I don't know the reason for sure, but they were suspecting one of my group members intended to stay longer in Japan. What do you think?
Can I just go alone again?

  4. heh global warming and 10/20 /50/ and 100 years agon summer in Japan was different? No. it was the same , there is no global warming is a bullshit 20 years ago and 10 years ago 35-40 C in summer in europa was something normal BUT TODAY IS GLOBAL WARMING WHEN IS 30 C ? xd stop watching TV .

  5. Welcome Suica expires in 28 days, whereas normal unregistered Suica expires in 10 years. Because expired balances on Welcome Suica become profit for JR East, they probably are happier to issue them despite the chip shortage.
