Our NEW VAN can’t get up this HILL! | Van Life UK
This week in our Van Life UK Adventures our new van can’t get up the steep narrow track to my cousin’s place. We’ve planned to stay here for a couple of weeks for some Van Upgrades. What will we do if we can’t get up there?

Buy a snatch strap!
Sorry, the 2cv could get up the "hill" and your rv couldnt?!
Thats why I love my 1996 Ford Transit rear wheel drive motorhome. I've seen heaps of front wheel drive m/homes and c/vans trying to head off to the their next free camp after a nights stay and sitting there spinning their front wheels on the wet grass from the overnight dew , not rain let alone trying to drive up a wet dirt road . π I would never buy a front wheel drive m/home or c/van .
Love your adventures. I was at Stonehenge October of last year. I pictured the place you were walking through the field! I live in Ohio, USA.
That was interesting with added of road adventure we have a Jayco marstervan and we soon fond we have to be carefull if we go on dirt roads
Have you seen first of the summer wine. And last of the summer wine. Gypsy fiddle and getting Sam home. Holmefirth is now a tourist spot. Nora batty wrinkle stocking.
Could have tried reversing up, turns it into a rear wheel drive π
We found Stongehenge a bit underwhelming.
Much more impressive was the 5000 year old village of Skara Brae in Scotland. Highly recommended.
Give the van the blue pill π
Give it some jandle mate ππ
Even in a front two wheel drive vehicle, letting some air out of the front tyres would give you more grip on the surface, did you notice the fronts were just spinning, bigger tyre surface area means more grip. There are two different modes of attack, first is very slow speed and the other, put the foot down, get a bit of speed up before you hit the steepest part. If either of these don't work, phone a friend with a truck or go back to the pub. ππ
Wow 30pounds each to see StoneHenge. I was there in 2003. Don't remember having to pay at all.
Wow! I love those old pubs. I want to become friends with your cousin, fantastic secluded property.
Even if you let air out off the front tyres probably wouldn't have done it no weight on the front end mate , luckily old smoky was there good job π yer you carnt beat 4×4 π
The highlight was the Citroen and the cider, as well as your freebie take of Stone Henge. Memories of the Severn Bridge and Wales! Looking forward to the revamped and off grid set up of the van. Nice of your cousin to have you there and help with the work. Glad Nigel got it up in the end, though it seems a threesome was what it took to achieve it!
Pedal to the metal Nigel π
Also just a heads up. Nigel would do better flying out of Birmingham or Manchester airports, rather than Heathrow, on his comings and goings, especially if you are in Wales. Much quicker times clearing the airport and better freeway links. I never fly in to the UK via Heathrow anymore. The big regional airports are so much more pleasant and efficient as a traveller! Also Bulmers Cider factory in Hereford is worth a visit, as is Ironbridge, to see the original iron bridge. When you get back to Germany don't miss Trier, one of my favourite towns in Germany. Fab university town. Amazing Roman ruins and also the birthplace of Karl Marx. There is also a German wine centre there. Not touristy either! My other favourite spot in England is Down House. Charles Darwin's home, now a museum in Kent. You can see his study with original microscopes, wander the house and also the grounds where he did lots of his experiments when writing 'On the Origins of Species'. Just fascinating.
Driving backwards youβre rear wheel drive π
Good one David you saved the day in many ways! Bill Mc
Airing down will help, but if you donβt have an air compressor to refill, its not an option. Turning off the ESC is a must when driving on slippery gravel.
What an adventure with Poss Poss. Lucky your cousin had the truck hey Sue! I would have felt exactly how you did on the narrow roads, and watching the van get the tow – not for me either. That pub was the teeniest I've seen. Am loving your adventures. Take care!
Youβre in my old stomping ground at Stonehenge β€
Towed up a steep incline using a tow ball anchor – you're scaring me.
Oh! I was camping one night at the Tuckers Grave Inn earlier this year, good camping grounds and pub, and visited Stonehenge with a friend who paid for the tickets, I had no idea how much she had paid. I must say I did like being close up and walking all around.
Suspect the 2CV got up the hill due to it being far lighter. Love that pub with the cider and the low door that was very cool. Just as I'm a history and archeology geek(Time Team anyone) know it would cost probably would pay the money to get that bit closer to Stonehenge, still furious at those knuckleheads who decided to spray it with paint protesting some oil or environmental thing hope they got prison for life after being forced to clean off their damage of course.
Your cousins house looks amazing – I was freaking with the tow up the hill – too many videos of towballs breaking and flying through windscreens – glad you made it! Best wishes with the conversion to off-grid. The auto/hardware shops sure are different in the UK. (Halfords could be an option like Supercheap)
THANK YOU Nigel and Sue, a great visit to STONEHENGE, wow in the early 1970βs it was free to visit, totally understand the upkeep needs to be funded though. Have fun working on your new Van making it just as you both want it for your travels ππ»ππ»ππ»ββοΈπ¦πΊ
