Overcrowded Italy? 5 Underrated towns in Puglia, Italy for your next trip to Europe.

We’re Emre and Maia. We’ve been slow traveling through Europe for the past 3 years, seeking authentic experiences in lesser known places. In this video we will show you some of our favorite underrated destinations in Italy so you too can be a visitor, not a tourist!

Overtourism has become a real issue in Europe in recent years. Small towns and cities end up overwhelmed with crowds of tourist jostling for selfies at ‘must see’ sights. We have found it more rewarding to seek out hidden gems off the beaten path.

These are the towns we feature in this video:

Conversano, near Polignano a Mare.
Nardò, near Gallipoli.
Galatina, between Gallipoli and Otranto.
Marittima, near Otranto.
Locorotondo, near Ostuni.

Conversano charmed us with its lively piazzas, cute restaurants and above all the ancient monastery of San Benedetto with its towering campanile.

Nardò will impress you with it’s ornate baroque architecture interwoven with Moorish accents.

Galatina’s claim to fame is the pasticiotto. A delicious pastry – invented TV here at a pasticceria where time seems to have stopped 50 years ago – just like the rest of Galatina.

Marittima feels a bit like a ghost town. Faded pastel colored walls and semi decrepit palazzos hint at glory days in the past. But it’s worth a visit -if for nothing else but the amazing home cooked food at the Osteria Vecchia.

Locorotondo shines with it’s white washed buildings, cute alleys and cozy restaurants. It gets its name from it’s circular shape perched on a hilltop .

  1. Hi guys! Thank you for yet another lovely video. We are a young pensioners couple and we have been living in Umbria for 3 years. We love it here but recently we started looking to get a second place in the north. From what I see in your video's we have quite the same taste in what we look for in a place to live so I was wondering if you could maybe give us your honest opinion on the following: if you had to choose between the Turin region or the Veneto region, which one would you pick and why. Thank you for your time, your opinion will be highly appreciated. Kind regards and keep up the great work! Lots of love from Montefranco ( btw if you are ever in the neighborhood we would love to buy you lunch 😉)

  2. My wife and I leave in 3 weeks for Conversano and Puglia. What I think was your first Conversano post sold us and we found what we wanted for lodging. Now if I can just my Italian more up to speed! Thanks for sharing your adventures.

  3. Hi again from Australia, because it takes us so long, (and so much money), to fly back and forth from Europe we too are planning to live there for a few years and travel slowly and you are certainly inspiring us. May I ask how you deal with the 90 day limit to stay in the Schengen zone?
