The Wartburg is a castle located in the immediate surroundings of Eisenach, in Thuringia, Germany. It stands at the top of a hill at 441 m above sea level. dominating the entire landscape of the Thuringian Forest and represents one of the highest and largest examples of European fortified architecture of the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages it was a great cultural hub linked to the Minnesänger. The castle is a transit point of both the ancient Via Regia (to the north) and the very old Rennsteig path (to the south), more than 150 km long, mostly in the Thuringian forest. In 1999 it became part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
