Discover the other side of Japan on the Kumano Kodo trail, one of Japan’s most remote and rewarding journeys. Kumano Kodo is an ancient pilgrimage route through the prefectures of Mie, Nara, and Wakayama. There are a variety of routes to choose from and treks range from short highlight walks to multi-day walks. The Nakahechi route links the three Grand Shrines of Kumano and is one of the most popular of the six main historic trails. The main destinations on the Nakahechi route are the shrines of Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha. Along the way, opt to spend the night in Kawayu Onsen, a town built along a river valley containing several hot springs. The journey ends at Kumano Nachi Taisha, Seigantoji Temple, and Nachi Waterfall, one of Japan’s highest at 133 metres.
