How Refugee Chefs are Bringing Myanmar’s Food Out of the Shadows

In the 12 months since our last video on Bangkok’s best-kept secret, the Burmese food served by migrants and refugees throughout the city, that cuisine has suddenly exploded into the mainstream. From upscale teahouses to rooftop restaurants to a thriving bar street, tea leaf salad and bowls of Shan Noodles are quickly becoming a part of local culinary culture. So in this video, we explore what’s changed, how it’s happened, and how ethnic cuisine hits the “big time”- from pizza to dim sum to, it seems, Myanmar’s specialties.

  1. Thanks for creating a video on our traditional cuisines. They are so good and so tasty. Anyone who ever gets to Thailand or Myanmar, give yourself a go to nearby Myanmar restaurant.
Myanmar ppl will be so friendly just tell them to recommend you something. You wont regret it. For sure.

  2. Since you do not know how to describe the Burmese food, as a Burmese myself I have to get into it. There’s a word I would use to describe our Burmese cuisine. That would be “intricate”. Because you can see from the first sight of any dish, you can sense that there’s a lot going on underneath and on the surface. You even acknowledge that “texture”. I’m not talking about the Michelin culinary level “ intricate” but if we’re talking about easily-accessible country-representing everyday-eats cuisine, I would use “intricate” to describe our foods. Because a single dish would take a lot to prepare whether it be just a salad or a chicken curry or a side dish soup. “Intricate” as in preparing a single item. There you have it. Thankful for your interest and love for our foods 🇲🇲

  3. The Burmese food in Bkk might be amazing but I also recommend to visit the country(ofc when it becomes stable) and try Burmese food at places that are recommended by local people. I m sure you will have a next level taste of Burmese food. I miss those as well now that I m living abroad TT

  4. I love that more people are willing to make videos abt my country but just to clear up, Daw Aung San Su Kyi was never the president of this country. We call her “နိုင်ငံတော်အတိုင်ပင်ခံပုဒ်ကိုယ်” in myanglish, “nai ngn taw a tine pin khn pote ko” which directly translates to “the adviser of the country”. Which I believe is above the president. In a book I’ve read it described her as the peacock lady, which is a symbol of freedom and her election party logo. I hope this clears up the confusion and please spread more about these situations because we really need a voice.

  5. I don’t know why I’m being emotional watching this Our country is a such a beautiful place possessing everything like treasure and natural resources but the people are having way too much egos
I hope there would be a chance to see my country in peaceful situations again before I die

  6. thanks for this video OTR, since Myanmar have been under coup for three years now and we are feeling depressed so this video will put smiles on every Burmese people faces. Have a great day and stay safe everyone!

  7. Rangoon tea house is extremely expensive place to eat Myanmar foods. Their target audience are foreigner and rich people. The taste is not that different from normal Myanmar restaurant. 😅

  8. Oh yes Thanaka (a tree that Myanmar ppl use as skincare+makeup) and “Thingyan” Water festival both originated from Myanmar but somehow now its originated from Thailand according to UN…
Thailand does have some similar traditions and even food but that actually bc Thailand used to be colonised by Myanmar don’t really want to mention that fact but this is only why they know tanaka and thingyan. I’ve been to Thailand many times since I was young, the scale of their Water Festival could never compare to Myanmar’s and they don’t even use tanaka and really sell it…. U see tanaka nearly everywhere in Myanmar…
The state of Myanmar tdy not only is our peace robbed our traditions got snatched away too admit the Junta💔

  9. Next time- if you have a chance – and if they have it, try this Burmese seasonal snack called "Kaung Hlaing Ti"
They ve this traditional snacks- steamed rice w coconut and crunchy peanut topping.

The color is bright purple – and its not food coloring. They extracted purple color and very unique flavor from whild flower grows next to paddy field only at the beginning of raining season.

And try – Sasame seed paste cooked in penut oil. Its a delicacy from the Middle Burma. Its goes well w/ hot rice and young tamarind leaf salad (with dried shrimp powder, chickpea powder, fish sauce, crush peanut, penut oil, fried onion ..
