Day 8 of our Tour du Mont Blanc began with a surprise. Throughout the night, we thought it was just raining, but when we unzipped the Durston X-Mid Pro 2+ tent in the morning, we were greeted by a blanket of snow covering the surrounding mountains and even some snow collected on the tent itself. The air was damp, and the inside of the tent had a layer of ice. The only solution? Fire up the stove and get some hot water boiling for a much-needed cup of coffee, while airing out the tent to clear the condensation.

As we warmed up, we noticed several other Durston tents nearby. A fellow camper, a photographer, stopped by to chat. He told us about a tragic event—on the day we took a taxi from Les Chapieux to Courmayeur, a group of French hikers had lost one of their members on Col de la Seigne. Disoriented, she tragically passed away, something we had feared when we heard helicopters circling while at Maison La Saxe. It was a sobering reminder of the mountain’s unpredictable nature.

Once the sun began to rise through the valley and the ice melted, we fueled up with hot muesli and more coffee before continuing our trek. Passing through Issert, we stopped for lunch at Café-Restaurant Chatelet to refuel. The next leg of our hike took us through a stunning forest, where we were treated to an incredible variety of mushrooms and beautiful wooden carvings along the path.

By the time we reached Hotel Alpina in Champex-Lac, the temperatures had dropped, and we were cold but content after another day of adventure on the TMB. We warmed up quickly with a bath then headed to the lounge area with the fire blazing and a couple of glasses of locally produced wine. It wasnt long before we reflected on the adventure so far over a fantastic meal that was exactly what we needed after such a long day. The hearty portions, delicious local ingredients, and cozy atmosphere were a perfect end to the day, leaving us ready for some well-earned rest.
