Stop a major city attraction one time and you never live it down!
Congestion zones are becoming more popular in other cities as well as London. It is better to not have a car whilst staying in London and make use of the public transport, including the tube and busses. Use a contactless credit/debit card or phone wallet to pay by tapping it on and off the transport. A good tip for any city is to use the hop on hop off open top bus tour when you first get there. You get to see all the sites and hear about their history and also make use of the transport to get around for 24 hours.
As well as staying in hotels and pubs/inns, consider local BnB's (Bed and Breakfast – not AirBnB). As well as providing you with a room and a home prepared breakfast, they are often interesting houses and you get to meet the hosts who will often have some great tips and ideas for the local area.
When pronouncing the names of counties like Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Yorkshire, etc, the "shire" on the end is pronounced more like "sher".
unless you have good reason DO NOT rent a car whilst you are in London. Indeed, if you are only going to cities, you will not want a car at all. Trains and faster, easier and easier, and parking is often very difficult and expensive in cities.
the way you say trafalgar is so funny
I echo the comments about NOT driving in London, or other big cities for that matter. After 50+ years of driving, I have learnt my own lesson regarding driving in London – I don't do it! If you intend to do a road trip, rent your vehicle from somewhere on the edge of the city (perhaps an airport) to avoid having to drive in the city centre. You should study the Highway Code (or watch some videos!) to get familiar with the rules of the road and particularly the meaning of road signs. Note that parking is often difficult to find, especially in urban areas, and are usually have quite expensive fees. Fuel is also pretty expensive – around ÂŁ1.50 per litre at present. In general a smaller car is best (provided you can fit your luggage and passengers in it) as parking and driving will be easier, and will use less fuel. There are interesting places to visit all over the UK. In particular all regions have places run by the National Trust, mostly fine houses and country estates with fantastic gardens and scenery. When getting round London, do use the Underground – it's easy with contactless cards (one for each person), but also buses are sometimes quicker and more convenient. And look at a map – sometimes it is actually quicker to walk between stations as you don't have to spend time descending escalators to the platforms.
