The thing about inflation is that is generally happening everywhere in the world. So say when I compare thailand to australia (home) both have had high inflation but the ratio of costs stays similar. Just wondering what resource you use to compare living costs between countries (you mentined a figure of 51% cheaper).
Ouch..Going back home 3 times a year can put a dent in the travel budget for sure, but if you can do it, good for you. Safe travels!
I'm from Calgary…Banff is super touristy and super expensive!! 😬 Your US $ will help, but be prepared. We used to be able to have nice weekend getaways there in the off season for reasonable $$…not anymore 😢
What app do you use to track various currency's value against the dollar?
Having budget travelled in my 20’s , the one thing I will not do now is miss things I want to see or do. I will cut back on food and accomodation but will do the balloon ride over Cappadocia.
Thanks guys, I love your videos! Your vibe is great and the content you give it informative and educational! You inspire me ❤
Hey guys great video again. May I ask what city are you in in Mexico?
Gen X like me are either slowing down or retiring, hence travelling.
New generations have zero confidence in the future and are also travelling more.
Solutions;
1. Stay invested. The stock market should continue following inflation higher (higher profits), although recession usually a risk (and then lower prices…).
2. Visit 2nd cities. Lyon instead of Paris. Bragga instead of Lisbon. Etc.
3. You’re lucky you already visit the most popular cities and countries. Maybe now is time to visit the less beaten path, like Africa?
4. Slow travel… very slow 😅
5. Volunteering and woofing expériences?
… and I have to add to my previous comment, unfortunately Montreal, which I wanted to recommend a few years sgo, is no longer affordable 😢
I completely feel your pain, we were in Mexico in winter of 2022 when the value of the peso spiked versus the US and Canadian dollars and it almost tripled our budget by the end of the winter! The cost of living increases have definitely changed the way we travel now, last year we mainly stayed with friends all over Canada and the US, and this winter we are working in the Philippines and doing a bit if traveling around South East Asia/Australia/New Zealand from there. Luckily we have friends in a few of those places we can stay with or even some of that would be off the table!
Enjoyed your video and commentary. We spent 2 years in Mexico 2022-2024. Every time we went to the grocery store prices would go up little by little. Traveling southern Europe we've seen it also. We spent August in Istanbul. You're right on with the inflation there. I think it's gone up about 70% this last year. The days of Turkey being dirt cheap are long gone. Still a great value for the cultural experience. We actually changed are September plans to Saranda over the Turkish coast because of inflation and the new short term rental law.
So true about Argentina it got more expensive but cheaper than USA. I got a Condo in BsAs if you go let me know. We are from USA but my brother lives there😊.
I laughed when you mentioned Moose Jaw. I’m from Regina, a neighbouring city. Moose Jaw is a quaint little city with lots to see and do. There is a thermal spa in the city with hotel which a draw but not cheap. Just fun to say you’ve been to Moose Jaw!!
well done
Thailand has low inflation.
I guess you know to take US dollars and exchange on the street in Argentina. It's called the dolar blue rate and is significantly better than the official rate. Rates vary from city to city and bank note to bank note. $100 bill is best. Rates at border towns are worst
Good informative video. Thank you. I think there was not a real increase in Air travel going to Thailand. I got a return ticket for my wife and I for $2340 ($1170/person) from Detroit to Bangkok. Travel time is 10th of November returning on 26th December via Turkish Airline! I think this is a real bargain! Not sure if the fare was cheaper before
Probably not saying something you don’t already know, but if you’re flying back to the states from Mexico you can save money by flying to Tijuana airport and crossing into San Diego straight from the airport. Regional flights within Mexico are usually cheaper. Once you get to the border take an uber to the San Ysidro trolley then a quick ride to the Middletown station. From there it’s a quick shuttle to the airport. Once there Alaska air can be a good value.
Canada has plenty for you to offer! You can certainly be in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan for a deeper discount. Hope that you like junior hockey! Banff would not save you any money as it is a tourist mecca in Western Canada. But certainly Canada has a lot to see, and do, both touristy and not. The currency exchange for you from US to Canada will be in your favour to be sure (by close to 40%). Your transportation costs will be substantially less from Washington. Inflation of course is a big factor and you bring forth some good ideas on combatting the effects. Great suggestions. Continue enjoying Mexico and the tacos!
Living in Canada 😊 it is a great country… that said Mexico one of my favorite countries and for sure my favorite is ZIHUATANEJO, best local markets, food street , quiet , beautiful beach, you can walk all over, no need for taxis, great food store a real typical mexicain city,,,,,, and a beautiful boardwalk,,,, hope you get the chance to visit it.
I have definitely noticed accommodation prices gone up a lot in the last 3 years. Having said that, I still travel and am currently in Alicante and went to the Red Corner Bar and had a pint for you!
Inflation hit everywhere but I've been able to lower my living costs in the US so much that it rivals Southeast Asia or Eastern Europe. If my goal were to experience a better quality of life, it would make sense to travel outside the US. But if my goal is to save money, I might as well stay where I am. I've been to 40 countries since 1990 so there aren't many places I want to go anymore. It was fun while it lasted.
Love your videos and you convinced us to go to Thailand this past Feb. and we are going back this Feb. You have also convinced us to try Turkey. Funny you mention Moose Jaw, we live in Regina which is 40 minutes away. Do not visit in the winter though – summer is lovely. Highly recommend Calgary, Banff, Jasper area once it recovers from fires.
I have a hard time believing that people are across the globe putting in high demand just because they were stuck around home for a few years. A large portion of the population in the U.S. did not have passports a few years ago.
it;s getting so expensive in Thailand, I am redirecting my choices
Unfortunately the dollar may weaken as well. As Fed cuts rates your dollar may not go as far as my guess is past 3 years was least expensive travel we’ll see for a long time.
We are in Tunisia right now and it is quite affordable. However, it is a little rough for an independent traveler (we are on a tour), possibly. A beer (Beck’s) is 8 Tunisian dinars, about $2.50.
8:17 Another YouTuber I watch paid $137 for tacos in NYC
You could easily adjust I'f did decide to go to se Asia and go for 5 month and change it up a bit, bellingham is nice from April to Oct as u know so there's flexibility there and living costs haven't changed a great deal in say thailand from year over year so really the only major cost is that flight and Phillipines air flies direct now seattle to manila..
Carry on..
Ack! So sad! Prices rising all over the world too
Wonderful video! If you come to Canada you really must go to the Yukon. Dawson City and Whitehorse are worth the visit.
Love all your videos!❤The key is being flexible!
big change in air fare cost for me..
I’ve noticed that it is hard to find great airfare deals. Usually I’ve been able to find airfare to Spain or Portugal in the summer for <$500 out of Chicago… now it’s more like >$800.
My wife and I are headed to Buenos Aires next month. From what I can tell, it looks like the exchange rate hasn’t changed too much. We are planning on using Western Union, to get the better exchange rate. Have you checked into that?
Safe travels! We always enjoy your vlogs.
what would your rough "monthly" budget me, and how much have you seen it increase?
I thought the exchange between the two of you on this video was especially pleasant and balanced. Good job Brian on stepping back a little. Not sure if that was intentional. It certainly was noticeable. Both of your observations are always so on point. I love the thoughtfulness of your videos.
I found that accommodation prices shot up over a few months and by a lot ! As a single traveller I have not been able or willing to pay what I sometimes feel are over inflated prices . So here I am stuck in the UK for winter 😏. Will spend my time here saving and planning “ affordable “ trips for next year . 👜 🚌 ✈️ xx
You are my favorite full-time travel couple i have just discovered, thanks for making such great videos. It’s very inspiring!
Yay come to Victoria!
Thank you so much for the great information, definitely Mexico has a lot to offer regarding their history beautiful towns plus their lovely people.
