Yugoslav Spomeniks (Part 11-A): Eastern North Macedonia Road Trip – Lake Dojran
1-3. September 2024. Macedonia (Makedonija / Македонија) AKA North Macedonia.
Join me for another Balkans drive-about, this time in the eastern part of Macedonia.
This video is the first of four presenting my 8-day Autumn drive around the eastern part of Macedonia for 390 miles (628 km) looking for Yugoslav-era spomeniks (monuments). I found (21) of them plus a Youth Pioneer Children’s Resort on Lake Dojran. The spomeniks are World War II memorial sculptures that were part of a grand project of Tito’s to unify socialist Yugoslavia in the aftermath of the NOB. Estimates put the number of such spomeniks built at up to 40,000. These communist works of art are unique and beautiful and often abandoned.
The places I rolled through are (Part 11-A): Star Dojran (Стар Дојран), Nov Dojran (Нов Дојран), Nikoliḱ (Николиќ), Gevgelija (Гевгелија), Negorci (Негорци), Mrzenci (Мрзенци).
Special shoutout to Donald Niebyl and his spomenikdatabase.org; without his thorough work, it would be a far greater task to locate these monuments and the learn the stories behind them.

During the yugoslavian era, this area was a flourishing turistic resort. now the whole site has been left derelict!!!

I was there between first kids' visitors. Beach was still under construction. Was nice and have a good memory of 11 years old.
