Marie Antoinette’s Bedroom – Chateau de Versailles
A look into Marie Antoinette’s Bedroom in the Palace of Versailles (France).
This room was built for Marie Leszczyńska in 1735 and was modified several times by Marie-Antoinette. Its current appearance dates from the last series of changes carried out for the queen by Richard Mique: Richard Mique (1728-1794) was a French architect and Intendant General of Buildings to Louis XVI… (1784). In place of the silks hanging previously in the room, Mique proposed a more contemporary look of wood paneling made by the Rousseau brothers: Jean Hugues and Jean Siméon Rousseau were sculptors and sons of the sculptor Jules Antoine Rousseau (1710-1782) … with decoration from antiquity. This style had recently come into fashion thanks to the recent discovery of the remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
