TRIP REPORT | First Time on Austrian Boeing 787! | Chicago to Vienna | Austrian Airlines Boeing 787

Austrian Trip Report flying from Chicago to Vienna onboard one of the Austrian B787-9 on a nice autumn afternoon.

A beautiful autumn flight from Chicago to Vienna onboard the brand-new Austrian Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The flight was fully booked, but still, the new plane, new cabin, new seats, and the beautiful use of the Sky Interior… made this one a nice flight.

However, and this is a “BIG HOWEVER” I’m not planning to fly Austrian’s B787 again. The crew blooks the windows in fully dim and they don’t unlock them until they decide it’s a good moment to do so. For this flight it worked more or less well, as the Sunset and Sunrise came exactly at the end of the dinner and with breakfast… but be ready to have flights in full darkness. Don’t count with me, Austrian.

We took off to the west and after a 180Β° turn, we started our route towards Vienna. The views of the airport and Chicago downtown just after takeoff were incredible. From there we flew towards Canada, where we found the night. The cross of the Atlantic was completely uneventful, as we couldn’t see anything with the blocked windows. Maybe there were some Borealis, as we were at a good latitude and the perfect moment of the year… but we’ll never know that, as Austrian doesn’t allow you to see anything outside the plane.

Once over Europe, we enjoyed an amazing Sunrise over Germany and the Czech Republic. After a nice approach between clouds, we landed on time in Vienna.

About the catering service, they offered a main meal after departure and a little breakfast (very little) just before starting the descent to Vienna. The main meal was quite ok, but still nothing special. I would say the main meal was the best. The salad, flooded in mayonnaise, and the plain piece of cake they offered as dessert wasn’t special at all. The breakfast was just a small warm sandwich with coffee & orange juice.

Now it’s your turn!
Have you ever flown with Austrian? Which route? How was the experience? Have you ever flown on the Boeing 787? Have you ever been in Chicago? Maybe in Vienna? What do you think about the Austrian service? What do you think about this blocked windows policy?
Lots of things to talk about! Read you all in the comments!

  1. Great report Lucas, I think I might be avoiding Austrian in the future lol tbh the food looked gross and the chicken looked raw, and mayonnaise? I like mayo sometimes but that was just off putting.

  2. Como siempre muy buenos videos y bellas imΓ‘genes todo muy hermoso gracias amigo πŸ‡¨πŸ‡΄πŸ‡¨πŸ‡΄πŸ‡¨πŸ‡΄πŸ‡¨πŸ‡΄πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ™πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ€πŸ€

  3. You said about the windows dimming.. "that's why I don't like the 787". Its not the plane's fault but the airline. I flew on Etihad 787 and they fully let us control the windows and many airlines doing the same.. that would be normal.. unfortunately some airline not giving the freedom to the passangers which is a major problem! they should change their policy..And actually I may would just simply ask about this someone from the crew that 1st of all why they are doing that, 2nd is it possible to unlock my window pls.

  4. I fully support airlines that block the windows during the flight over the Atlantic. I have several reasons. (1)Thank you, but I don't want to see blinding bright white clouds or pitch dark nothing over the ocean for the 5 hundreth time I fly between America and Europe. (2)When it is worth seeing, before dinner and when breakfast begins they are not blocked. (3)Relatively few people fly for sake of videoing a flight to monetize it on youtube or other. (4) Even if ALL window seat filmed during the flight, you would be a MINORITY, 78% of the coach do not seat by the window. That's why some airlines take matter in hands, to avoid quarrel in cabin (5)When over the ocean, please let me just rest. I am not flying for the joy of it, but I have things to do over there and I'd rather be collected AFTER arrival. Can you imagine when in the comforting twilight of the cabin someone opens up the shade and light cuts through the dark like knife in your eyes just because he/she wants to see if clouds are white from above? They are my friend! (6) Even if you have to pay for your seat selection for some ambiguous reason, (aren't you frequent flyer?) you have the chance to enjoy the view when it's worth it: over land. Like when flying to South Korea, the Polish Airlines LOT never blocks the windows for example. Otherwise the clip is nicely done, particularly nice aerial views of Chicago. Austrian is part of the Lufthansa Group and they are worse than mediocre as far as quality of catering is concerned, Air France is significantly better I think, but if I go to Vienna, I might prefer a direct flight over the better food.

  5. What do you say about the noise level inside the B787 compared to older planes like A330 and A340?

Unfortunately i didn't had the chance to fly with new long haul planes yet.

  6. Great video as always, thanks for sharing.
Just allow me one hint. The route you show at the beginning is not correct. Planes never fly transatlantic routes straightly from west to east, but along great circles, which is much shorter. So in this case the route would have gone close to Greenland or even over Greenland.

  7. I flew in the ANA dreamliner this year and they allowed me to look out of the window the whole time, I just had to dim it a little bit during sunset.

  8. Not a fan of blocked windows at all. But I wonder how often one has to repeat it.
Do you know that Austrian also keeps the windows blocked on the westbound daytime flights to the US?
How was the quality of the WiFi (if there way any)?
When you said "no sockets" does not also mean not even an USB socket or "just" no real power outlets?
Had there been just those two (surprisingly disgusting) meals or did you also get something to drink during the night?

  9. think they do it so that you don't disturb the neighbors while they are sleeping or children playing around with it, but Austrian Airlinescatering is the best ever in the business class

  10. I hate it when they block the windows!! I like to be able to look out of my window whenever I want to. On some airlines, staff will unlock your window if you ask, while on other airlines they refuse.

  11. i really don't mind the dimming of the windows on a long haul flight. most recently i flew on aeromexico 787-9 in C class MEX to AMS. it was a night departure and the dimmed windows didn't bother me. i look out at take off and landing and in between it's either sleeping or watching movies.
Other times i flew 787 was with thai airways once on a day flight BKK to Bali, and there the windows were not dimmed. on a long haul flight from BKK to Vienna with thai, the windows were dimmed.
even if the windows are not dimmable, it is normal on long haul flights for the crew to ask pax to close the window shades. happened last month on KLM and Lufthansa flights i took to and from mexico. i really do not see the fuss.

and you want open windows but to have people lower the brightness of their tv screens? come on. how about using an eye mask??? the windows are great on a short haul flight. you are not gonna tell anyone that you intend to raw dog a flight and look out the window for 8 hours.

  12. flown with austrian many times as i am based in innsbruck. experiences are usually fine. especially connecting in Vienna is very easy. compared to other european airlines they are solid without being exceptional. compared to US based airlines they are better.
catering is usually very good by do&co, especially when departing from Vienna. and business class long haul with austrian is a treat with their flying chef on board. even in economy they are ok. far better than Lufthansa, even if the product isn't that different. better catering and friendlier crews make a big difference. most recent longhaul flight was on LH MEX-FRA in premium eco and that was underwhelming as expected. outbound on KLM economy comfort i was happier than in LH premium eco. go figure.
between Austria and north america austrian would be among my top choices for sure. KLM, aeromexico and air france would be other good choices. often i end up flying with Lufthansa, because it has the best route network and unfortunately Austrian did not resume their flights to Mexico this winter, by unfortunately prioritising US destinations.
