I Spent A Day in Europe’s Largest Gypsy Slum

In Plovdiv, Bulgaria, there is a slum where more than 70,000 gypsies (or Romani people) call home. I was so curious to find out how they are living, so I went there and I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw! Thanks for watching, and comment down below with your thoughts on this story 🙂

  1. I went into Stolipinovo feeling nervous and intimidated — unsure of what I’d see, who I’d meet, and how I’d be received. But as the day unfolded, those feelings completely melted away. What I discovered instead was a community full of warmth, resilience, and incredible people with big hearts and inspiring stories.

This experience reminded me yet again why I love what I do — it’s easy to label or stereotype places from the outside, but until you walk the streets, talk to the locals, and share a meal, you’ll never truly understand. Stolipinovo further proves that every place has its own magic!

Thanks for watching and I am looking forward to reading your comments, thoughts and reactions down below!

  2. When he says they go “work” in other countries, most of the time they are actually begging and lying to get money. I see them all over my town in California on street corners asking for money for a funeral or a sick kid. It’s always the same people with a different lie. They will harass you at the ATM for money, exploit their own children and steal. It’s just a fact. Then they get those nice cars and other unnecessary flashy bs you see here while this city piles with trash. Don’t give them money!!!

  3. I just hate he wears that Masters 2024 hat when walking through slums. It’s a golf tournament that’s costs easily $10k to attend. I just think it’s tacky to show off wealth like that in some of these places. Sure most overseas won’t even know what it is, but some of your viewers do.

  4. we have roma/gypsies in czechia too, they can absolutely go to school just like any kid in czechia, but they dont. parents dont make them, they dont care about education. we had a few in our class and they went like once a week and would usually steal something from someone in class. im not saying thats all of them but please dont say they are discriminated against, you would not want to employ someone that will steal from you and come to work once a week. if they dont want to work or go to school thats up to them. they get social support money and they spend it on expensive clothes, cogarettes or alcohol. believe me, social workers are trying to help them, in lot of cases they simply dont want anything to change…

  5. Drew, you need to do a little more research.Bulgaria under Ottoman rule (1396–1878).After so many years of the Turkish language, some words remained in the Bulgarian language. This is the case throughout the Balkans.

  6. european roma arent banned from education im proof of that my parents did send me to school i do have work its easy it just that the ones living in slum are lazy and rely on goverment support we living the cities and villages are fine and normal

  7. I am someone who lives in Stiplivo, Bulgaria. Even though it looks bad from the outside, I am sure that the place we live in will be a better place in the future. Our new generations are more intelligent and intelligent. Underdeveloped people constantly have children and release them to the streets. This is the reason why some children are on the streets. Education and hospital conditions are very good. It is also a fact that children do not want to read, it is bad in the video. Of course, there are shows and places, and distorted events. Of course, there are those who marry early, but this is the system here and this is not forced on anyone and there is no forced marriage. We have to look at the bright side. This is a place where gangs and rape are very rare in this wild world. Long story short, everyone is happy with where they live. You cannot generalize an entire society based on a few people. Even though it is a backward mentality, it has a progressive mentality. There are people living in bad conditions as well as those living in good conditions.

  8. I'm so excited about this one, as a descendant of Roma travelers. I've been trying to find out more about the history and culture of my ancestors. I agree, though: opinions are split on the use of "Gypsy." I personally feel uncomfortable using it, but it really does seem hit or miss.

  9. They are not actually Turkish, they are Turkophone and they think being Turkish is of higher status (which it is), so Turkish speaking Muslim Gypsies see themselves different than other Gypsies

  10. "Seu documentário sobre o maior gueto cigano da Europa foi simplesmente incrível! A forma como você retratou a vida das pessoas que moram lá foi muito emocionante e tocante. Adorei a forma como você abordou o tema da discriminação e da exclusão social. Seu trabalho é um chamado à ação para que todos nós possamos fazer a diferença. Parabéns por este trabalho tão importante! #guetocigano #documentário #viagem #culturacigana"👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💪🏻❣️
