    We arrive at the bus station and head straight to the Old Town of Riga, meet some locals and finally make it to the supermarket.

    We later head for the Riga Central Market and meet our Latvian Native friend Anna who goes over this delicious Latvian obsession ( and sometimes not so delicious).

      I love black bread buttered, with eggs and anchovies. It's also delicious with sour cream, tomatoes and onions, and my favorite sweet style is with cream cheese and raspberry jam. Since I live in America, I've never had the chance to taste the bread soup or candies. Funny that nobody in the Latvian community here makes the bread soup.

      I love bread soup and also yoghurt with black bread. Didn't tried karums with black bread yet. Everything with dark rye bread tastes amazing. When I was a child living on countryside the best evening dessert snack was rye bread with jam (raspberry or strawberry) and fresh milk.

      Black bread comes with evry soup. Black bread is Hard hawy and .. some says 1 slice Black bread with "kūpināts speķis" gives ultimate strenght for mens.

      THE TIME has come earlier than I thought… look at the Central Market Tirgus… it's empty/dead… the only visitor is youtuber and partner… that's all… it's basically getting closer and closer to death… Riga… Latvia… Riga mana vismilaka pilseta… I miss it so much… How can we prevent it from dying out? Is there any hope left?

      I think Latvians would also find it weird to have chocolate on a cheese, because the cottage cheese used for Karums isn't really a cheese in the minds of Latvians. There's a different term for that in Latvian: "biezpiens", which literally translates to "thick milk" and milk goes well with chocolate 🙂 In fact, people say that it's better to use the word "quark" instead of the "cottage cheese" to describe the "biezpiens" as the cottage cheese usually has added salt, while quark/biezpiens doesn't.

      Justine is not embellishing the Latvian's LOVE of Black Bread! I attended Latvian Heritage weekend, here in DC, where the bread was being sold! There was also a presentation regarding their reverence of Latvian Black Bread!

      Kārums with black bread? We've not yet discovered this particular iteration of one of our staple "something tasty" treats, but that won't be true for much longer. Also, rupjmaize zupiņa (with a nice dollop of whipped latvian cream, which I'd love to compare back to back with Devon clotted cream one day) has become something I adore.
