The Gairaut waterfall was constructed in the 19th century alongside a wooden alpine chalet to celebrate the completion of the Vésubie canal.Inspired by Austrian landscapes, the waterfall was built in 1883 when central European spas, like Baden Baden in Germany, were in vogue. They created a rustic artificial rock wall and a wide waterfall which also served a functional purpose: oxygenating the water before distributing it into the city.Whilst the surrounding area is a little artificial, with caves and ponds, the views back to Nice city are spectacular. Definitely worth a visit.
“This fall located a few miles from Nice center is really worth a visit. The fall itself is pretty and the view over the city is spectacular. There is also a little Church nearby which is also worth visiting.”
An artificial decoration more true than nature. Built in the 19th century, between 1878 and 1883, the Cascade de Gairaut has become one of the most emblematic places in Nice. This little haven of peace is a breath of fresh air, far from the tumult of the city centre.Perched on the hill of Gairaut, it overlooks all of Nice and offers panoramic views of the sea, the airport or its famous neighbour, the Château hill. Historically, it was created to commemorate the arrival of water in Nice via the Vesubie Canal. The Cascade de Gairaut is surmounted by a pretty alpine cottage, the guard house. Although this is inaccessible, it is possible to cross the cave. Inside, as on the outside elsewhere, everything is made of false rocks, false wood and false stalactites. The result, however, seems very real and, without reading this article, one might think that everything is natural.
The visit is quick but exotic, a short walk of freshness. Those who wish to extend the ballad can continue on the trail at the foot of the Cascade. It is as well warning you to avoid any unpleasant surprises, it is relatively small and unfortunately full of waste. Indeed, its opening 24 hours a day causes many young people to meet at night. O despair, they do not always throw away their garbage after they pass.Nevertheless, it is a must-see spot that must be discovered during a stay in Nice. It should be noted that the Cascade de Gairaut, as well as its cave, its basin and its cottage, have been inscribed as a Historic Monument since 2001.
