On the morning of my fifth full day in South Korea, I decided to do something a little unique for breakfast. I decided to go to a Korean convenience store and spend 12,000 won, or roughly $10 USD, on different items and try them all on camera. Come along with me as I have my first Korean convenience store food experience!

FEATURED TRAVELER:

Sam:

Like in Japan, convenience store culture is big in South Korea. They have three main chains: 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and See You Soon. My boy Sam and I visited a 7-Eleven near our hotel. Convenience stores are everywhere in Seoul. This one was very small and didn’t have the biggest selection.

I grabbed a vitamin drink for 800 won. There were lots of sweets and processed sausages, but I passed on those. I got a coffee and found some triangle gimbaps, which are like Japanese onigiri. I went with one with meat and red sauce, a rice roll, a red bean jelly bar, a pancake with red bean paste, and seaweed chips. My 7 items came to just under my budget, and then I got a rice porridge to put me at exactly 12,000 won!

We posted up on a bench outside. I couldn’t wait to dig in!

I started with the vitamin drink, which was almost like an energy drink with a medicine taste. Then I went with the red bean paste bar. It looked like medicine but the taste was kind of bland. It was very gelatinous!

Then I went with the triangle gimbap, which you open exactly like an onigiri. I didn’t open the last onigiri I had in Japan properly. There are steps on the wrapper to opening them. I opened this one like a pro!

This triangle gimbap had pork and red pepper paste sauce, so I was looking forward to it being really spicy. I loved the crunch of the seaweed. It was spicy and sticky and the flavors were unified in a really delicious way. I could eat this for breakfast every day! And it only cost $1!

Then I went with some dried seaweed, which are dry, fresh, and very salty. They’re like a seaweed wafer! I could eat it all day!

Next, I tried the bun with red bean paste and cream inside. This was a different type of bun from the ones you get in China. It looked really decadent and filling, so I only had a bit. It was like a donut from Dunkin Donuts. The red bean paste with the whipped cream with the fluffy bun was really good!

Next, I went with the Korean hand roll, which is called a gimbap. The roll came pre-sliced, so I grabbed a couple of pieces off the end. It was so good! There was marinated barbecue beef inside with carrot, yellow radish, and rice inside. The barbecue was smoky and a little creamy! It was super filling but really delicious! I could eat this every day!

Then I went with some rice porridge, which came with a folding spoon. It looked really slimy! It was very rice-y with lots of veggies. I could see something inside that looked like mussels or an oyster. It wasn’t really my jam – it was cold and rice-y, but very healthy with lots of herbs.

My favorite thing was the gimbap! Then I finished with my Maxim Espresso latte, which I chugged in one go! Then I wrapped one with the seaweed sheets to create the ultimate seaweed gimbap sandwich!

Then Sam tried his yogurt drink, a bibimbap-flavored triangle gimbap, and a fluffy and airy cheesecake bun.

What an awesome Korean convenience store breakfast! It was an overload of food. I recommend the fishy items with seaweed!
