Where is the Chiemsee?
The Chiemsee is the largest lake in Bavaria and is a popular destination for a day trip and for longer stays. It is located just off the motorway between Munich and Salzburg in Austria.
As well as the lovely scenery, with the mountains to the south, the lake has two attractive islands which can be reached by boat trip and a number of different villages to explore.
It is also one of the stages on the German Alpine Road tourist route. Bernau am Chiemsee is the most commonly mentioned if driving the route straight through but those who are planning to make a stop might want to make the short drive north to Prien on the lake shore.
Chiemsee is a lake in Bavaria, Germany. The lake’s largest island, Herreninsel, or Men’s Island, is crossed with nature trails. It’s home to unfinished Herrenchiemsee Palace, built by King Ludwig II and today housing the King Ludwig II Museum. An Augustinian monastery is nearby. The 8th-century Benedictine convent Frauenwörth, with its Gothic bell tower, is on the smaller Fraueninsel, or Women’s Island.
Chiemsee is a freshwater lake in Bavaria, Germany, near Rosenheim. It is often called “the Bavarian Sea”. The rivers Tiroler Achen and Prien flow into the lake from the south, and the river Alz flows out towards the north. The Alz flows into the Inn which then merges with the Danube. The Chiemsee is divided into the bigger, north section, in the northeast, called Weitsee, and the Inselsee, in the southwest.
