Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen (Netherlands) | Zoo Review

Ouwehands Dierenpark in Rhenen is the panda zoo of the Netherlands, but also has a lot more to offer! A great animal population with numerous other highlights such as polar bears, elephants, tigers and giraffes, combined with some exciting enclosure architecture, make this zoo absolutely worth a visit!

Rhenen is located between Utrecht and Nijmegen, making it easy to reach from Germany as well. But I still think a lot of my fellow countrymen in NRW and the western parts of Lower Saxony think they have to go to Berlin to see Pandas… when they easily could simply head to Ouewehands Dierenpark instead.

  1. You have missed the bats in the large indoor hall… You can only see those if you goes in the dark labyrint.
Burgers Zoo is for me the best zoo of the Netherlands.

Ouwehands i have been a couple of months ago. The most special was a tiger who was swimming. I never saw that.

  2. Ouwehands Dierenpark also allows dogs in the park. I took my dog once but I won’t anymore cause I felt bad for both my dog and the other animals. My dog was really scared (especially near the wolves) and when we saw the Orangutans there was a younger Orangutan and he was scared of my dog, kept hiding behind his mother and the mother kept hitting the glass, trying to “defend” her child from my dog (even though my dog was trying to hide as well). The other animals didn’t really care but I felt bad for stressing the Orangutans and my dog out. I tried it cause it sounded fun but I regretted it so I wouldn’t recommend it (unless you need a guide/therapy dog of course).

  3. Kind of a missed opportunity to call it pandaria, but guess that would have been a copyright strike…
Can't honestly say anything about present day zoo's since my last visits have been over half a lifetime ago and I'm nearing 50 by now…Always loved Burger's zoo though thanks to childhood memories

  4. Artis of course. It’s the classic city zoo in the middle of Amsterdam and it has some of the most beautiful modern enclosures for the elephants and lions

  5. Yes, like others say, visit Burgers Zoo, the bush, the jungle and the rest. And for heritage sake Artis, did it stand the test of time? Is there the new microbia, yes, see microbes at work an addition??

  6. You should visit Safaripark Beekse Bergen! It's the only zoo in the Netherlands with a car safari, in addition to a boat and bus tour. There are absolutely massive valleys shared by several species and it's a sight to behold.

  7. My favorite is a slightly obscure one compared to the big names mentioned below, namely ZooParc Overloon. It's owned by the same people that own Beekse Bergen and you can tell with the way things are built up. Most importantly, to me anyways, almost all enclosures are big and still provide a good view for guests. There are a few exceptions, but these enclosures are slated to be replaced.

As for Ouwehands, yes you can see a clear distinction between the old habitats, which are very poor, and the new habitats, which are amazing. I'm glad you mentioned the bears and why they have weird behaviour sometimes. It is good for people to know that these bears were mistreated and have been given a beautiful home to live out the rest of their lives in. I love spending time there near the pool area during warmer days and just watch the bears play in the pool. Knowing where they came from and how they are living now is amazing.

  8. You should definitely go to Apenheul. Its really nice. For Ouwehands O think it's quite a nice zoo and it has an interesting history. At the beginning of the second world war the Dutch tried to mount their defense around here. So a lot of soldiers camped in the zoo during this time. Next to that all big predators were killed by the Dutch army as they were afraid the animals would attack them in the back would they be able to escape. The story goes the owners did hide one baby lion that did survive. And off course big love the Berenbos (Bear Forest).

  9. Hello, have you ever been to Wildlands Emmen in the Netherlands? I think it's a great zoo because the enclosure are big and the themes are really good visible for the guests so it feels like you are there where the animals live in the wild hope you make a video of it. Keep ongoing!!!

  10. Thank you for the video! I was so excited to see this pop up. As mentioned already in the comments, Burgers Zoo and Blijdorp are some really neat ones! I also think Aquazoo in Leeuwarden is worth a visit. I heard good things about Dierenpark Amesfoort, Zoo Eindhoven, GaiaZoo and ZooParc Overloon as well, but i haven't been able to visit these yet.

  11. To me Ouwenhands was a little bit more flashy and appeared to be more of a Theme Park than a Zoological Garden. Many ideas are hit or miss. I feel this way also about Orangutan enclosures. Of course it is good for them as it gives them an opportunity to climb, however the climbing structures look hidious and artificial to me. If I was to recommend a zoo in the Netherlands I would gladly recommend Burger's Zoo. Their indoor habitats particularly The Desert really blew me away. Rimba is also something that you don't see much often. A great mix of Asian animals living together.

  12. Hallo Martin, Ouwehands really is up there with the rarities koalas and giant pandas. Top 5 in the Netherlands for me would be at the moment: 1.Burgers Zoo 2.Gaia Zoo Kerkrade 3.Blijdorp Rotterdam 4.Ouwehands Dierenpark 5.ZieZoo Volkel.
For you 2 "Geheimtips" would be Dierenpark De Oliemeulen in Tilburg (Reptiles and Insects specialities and Zoo Veldhoven (birds) Keep up the great work!!!

  13. Blijdorp in the city of Rotterdam is amazing. It's a big zoo that consints of two parts. The old part and the new part whitch are seperated by a railway line. Both parts are connected by a tunnel. The new part includes the "Oceanium".

  14. Amsterdam Artis Zoo is my favorit Zoo because of the beautifull Victorian Style, and the fact it didn't change that much since i did visit it around 55 years ago with my brother and my Grandparents(1969)
