The Cité de Carcassonne, founded during the Gallo-Roman period, boasts a history spanning over 2,500 years. Initially a Gaulish settlement, it was transformed into a fortified town by the Romans in the 3rd century CE. Throughout the Middle Ages, it saw numerous construction projects under the Trencavel dynasty, including the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire. Restored in the 19th century by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997
