This phenomenal cemetery is the oldest and largest burial ground in Bordeaux. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 1791 it is located in the centre of the city on the site of a former Carthusian convent.
0376 Mausoleums Chartreuse contains an amazing variety of architecture, art and funerary sculpture. The French realist author Marie-Henri Beyle (1783-1842), better known by his pen name of Stendhal, called it a “magnificent cemetery.”
