Rue René Boulanger | Paris Walking Tour 2025

Walk In Paris 571:
A virtual walk in Paris, in the 10th arrondissement, along rue René Boulanger, Paris, France.

The street originated from the counterscarp path that ran along the outside of the Saint-Martin hill, a hill on the edge of the Charles V wall made up of rubbish dumps, which was converted into a bastion before 1609 during the work to improve the fortifications of Paris at the beginning of the 17th century.
From 1670, the rampart was removed to be replaced by the boulevard Saint-Martin and the place du Château-d’Eau. The counterscarp path then became the “rue des Fossés-Saint-Martin” running along the boulevard and the square established on the side of the old bastion below to the north (countryside).

Since 1944, it has borne the name of the trade unionist René Boulanger (1901-1944), who died during the Second World War.
