We bought a BUDGET 4×4 in AFRICA
We flew to Africa to buy and build a used 4×4 all for under $5000. Now we’re trying to take it on a 10,000km overland trip through 4 countries and some of the most remote areas of Southern Africa.
While we didn’t know what we would end up buying as we were flying down to Johannesburg, we ended up becoming good friends with a man selling a 1987 Toyota Hilux. Famous for their reliability, we would put the Hilux to its test and see if it can still hold up to long distance travel, even at 38 years old. The other challenge would be seeing if we could hold up. With it being the middle of summer, the truck having no air conditioning, and sitting on the ORIGINAL suspension from 1987, we would be in for an uncomfortable ride.
Along the way, we would meet some great people who would help us out before finally starting our 2.5 month trip.

From Kenya I love this kind of adventure I subscribe.
Stolen. Is a word you are going to become familiar with.
But the vehicle and geography are going to be sensational.
Oh. And as for beer. Do yourselves a favour and drink βTaffelβ. The rest are headaches material. Cheers.

First year for the double cab or crew cab as it's also called came in production here in South Africa. Ja their slow underpowered thirsty old Bakkies but a Hilux will get you there. Those wing windows we call them Kalahari air conditioning when the bakkie doesn't have ac which at the time wasn't standard on most work bakkies like the Hilux
That's very misleading. They ain't no budget 4 x 4.
that was a good deal for the hilux. R68k
Congratulations! You chose the most reliable car available. It may be slow, but it'll always bring you home. The last real 4×4 Hikux
4:52 No, the Lux is not a donkey, it's a draft horse. No one is going to take a donkey to war.
Anyway, shame that you had to be saddled with the Y-engine, but I guess that's why you got it so cheap.
4:00 you'll still find brand new hiluxes with those lockboxesππ
A sfa Hilux isn't a budget 4bie anymore they're prices are ridiculous in sa now
Yes! I had a 4y powered hilux in australia. Such a simple an reliable engine and with the low gearing it was great for offroad.
