We bought a BUDGET 4×4 in AFRICA

We flew to Africa to buy and build a used 4×4 all for under $5000. Now we’re trying to take it on a 10,000km overland trip through 4 countries and some of the most remote areas of Southern Africa.

While we didn’t know what we would end up buying as we were flying down to Johannesburg, we ended up becoming good friends with a man selling a 1987 Toyota Hilux. Famous for their reliability, we would put the Hilux to its test and see if it can still hold up to long distance travel, even at 38 years old. The other challenge would be seeing if we could hold up. With it being the middle of summer, the truck having no air conditioning, and sitting on the ORIGINAL suspension from 1987, we would be in for an uncomfortable ride.

Along the way, we would meet some great people who would help us out before finally starting our 2.5 month trip.

  1. Great to find you guys here today!

Well done- Look forward to meeting you when you reach, Hermanus or Cape Town. Will take you wild camping… on the beach.
Have a more modern Hilux and a basic roof top tent too…

    Safe travels.

  2. If you havent yet passed through Lesotho, I would try one of my favourite Camp site, Bob Phillips camp site, its very in formal basically just a longdrop in an amazing location amongst the mountains: 29Β°48'32.2"S 28Β°49'31.2"E

  3. First year for the double cab or crew cab as it's also called came in production here in South Africa. Ja their slow underpowered thirsty old Bakkies but a Hilux will get you there. Those wing windows we call them Kalahari air conditioning when the bakkie doesn't have ac which at the time wasn't standard on most work bakkies like the Hilux
