Lourmarin
Lourmarin is a charming village located in the heart of Provence, at the foot of the Luberon Massif. Lourmarin is one of the oldest villages in the Luberon region, with a history dating back to ancient times. During the Middle Ages, Lourmarin grew into a significant trading and agricultural hub, and its strategic position on a trade route attracted merchants from all over Provence.
One of Lourmarin’s key landmarks is the Renaissance Château de Lourmarin, which dominates the town and its surroundings. Built in the 15th century, it was the first Renaissance château in Provence and a witness to the region’s tumultuous history. Over the centuries, the château served as both the residence of wealthy families and a defensive fortress. Today, after careful restoration, it has become one of Lourmarin’s main tourist attractions, with visitors able to explore its interior and admire a rich collection of art and furniture from the period.
Lourmarin is also famously connected with some of the greatest figures in literature. In the 1950s, Albert Camus, the Nobel Prize-winning author, made his home here. Camus loved the village for its tranquility, beauty, and inspiring atmosphere. He spent many hours in Lourmarin writing, and his grave can be visited in the local cemetery. His presence also attracted other artists and intellectuals to the village, helping to solidify its reputation as a cultural and artistic center.
Lourmarin’s location in a valley surrounded by the Luberon hills means that the landscapes are breathtaking. On one side, the rocky peaks rise, while on the other, there are picturesque fields, vineyards, and olive groves—typical of the Provence region. This area, known for producing excellent wine and olive oil, offers visitors the chance to taste local products at the many markets and festivals held here throughout the year.
