Catching the Last Train in the Philippines

The railway network in the Philippines has historically been limited. As of 2024, the country has approximately 533 kilometers of railway tracks, with only about 130 kilometers operational, primarily serving Metro Manila and parts of Luzon.
The Manila-Legazpi railway line, once a vital transportation route in the Philippines, has seen significant portions abandoned due to a combination of natural disasters, infrastructural challenges, and financial constraints.
In November 2024, when this video was filmed, there had only been 2 active parts of the Philippino National Railway which I was exploring during my visit there.
I went to the Philippines to ride their last trains, even the ones which did not exist on paper!
Β On 26th of February, the PNR has resumed the passenger service between Naga and Legazpi: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1BETAtTpR8/

Very interesting video, thanks for making it! I too have ridden on the PNR trains, on the line you showed us inside the DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit), from Alabang to Tutuban on both a DMU and loco hauled trains. They were very busy, all seats taken at the start of the journey (going both ways) with more people squeezing on along the run! The government are building a new high speed line from Manila to Clark, and the Alabang line also appears to undergoing modernisation……
Great video. That trash from the floods is disheartening to say the least.
What a total slum the city of Naga is. People dumping trash everywhere. No pride in themselves or their city. A perfect reason never to waste your tourist or international redevelopment dollars visiting or supporting such a vile people and their country.
Been awhile though another very great video. Content always good. Welcome back.
Phantastic to see you in the Philippines!
Iβve been on one of those draisins nr Lucena.

What an extraordinary journey. Thanks for taking us with you.
Thank you for this unexpected story! I have a question – what is the gauge of the Philippines railroads?
Never seen anything like those 'rail cars' ..amazing ! Love your videos .
My man's back
So many cool things in this video! You look fantastic. The DIY rail-cars are something I'd never heard of before. I didn't know that the villages would be that nice.
Thank you for posting. I hope you're well and having fun.
Great video! This popped up just after I thought about your channel, what a coincidence. Last time I was in Philippines it was doing disaster relief for remote villages after a really bad typhoon quite some years ago.

Ironic that I got this video recommended to me whilst on the Naga to Manila bus.
Nice one, VAGA.

Thank you.

What an absolute shithole
Kinda funny I came across one of your videos just few days ago, exploring far cities in Russia, and now youβre touring my home country! Hope you had a great experience in the Philippines!
Well, that was fun! Those homemade rail cars really interested me ~ such a cool idea! I can't help wondering about the first guy who built one of those! I'm surprised that they're light enough to pick up so easily. I think I'd feel somewhat nervous on the bridges !
Another fine video. Thanks from North Carolina, USA.
