Welcome to a walk in Düsseldorf, Germany, in end of February 2025, during the city’s chaotic Rhenish Carnival (or Karneval) celebration on Weiberfastnacht. Here I am walking around the Altstadt (Old Town) to show you some highlights. The Düsseldorfer Karneval is a spectacular event that transforms the city into a vibrant tapestry of color, creativity, and contagious laughter. In 2025, this renowned celebration promises to be more extraordinary than ever, bringing a perfect blend of passion, humor, and community spirit that is unmatched anywhere else in Germany. This 7-day extravaganza is a whirlwind of parades, costume parties, and cheeky social commentary on the year’s political landscape, all set against the backdrop of Düsseldorf’s lively streets. The “fifth season” of the year kicks off on November 11th with the awakening of the Hoppeditz puppet, a whimsical character who symbolizes the start of the festivities, and culminates in his symbolic burial on Ash Wednesday. The celebrations reach their peak with the incredible Rose Monday parade, one of the largest in Germany, drawing thousands of spectators and broadcast nationwide for all to enjoy.
