Acireale Carnival in Sicily is the most beautiful carnival in Sicily and one of the most important and famous carnivals in Italy. The Sicilian festival has a long and rich history, dating back to the 16th century. The Sicilian Carnival takes place in the charming baroque town of Acireale, located between Mount Etna and the sea. Acireale Carnival is a vibrant celebration filled with evening shows, street performances, masks, confetti, lights and music. The carnival features stunning parades of allegorical-grotesque floats, which are crafted by skilled artisans using papier-mâché and decorated with flowers. The floats decorated with flowers and allegorical figures in papier-mâché parade through the streets of town and reach Piazza del Duomo, accompanied by music, confetti, masks and traditional puppets. The parade of allegorical-grotesque papier-mâché floats give their show through thousands of bulbs and lights, spectacular movements and constantly changing scenography. Acireale is a coastal city in the north-east of the Metropolitan City of Catania, Sicily, southern Italy, set half-way between Catania and Taormina. Located at the foot of Mount Etna, facing the Ionian Sea, Acireale is home to beautiful churches but also to the oldest academy in Sicily, the Accademia di scienze, lettere e belle arti degli Zelanti e dei Dafnici. The centre of the old town is Piazza Duomo, a beautiful Baroque gathering of some fine baroque buildings with an inspiring architecture. The Cathedral of Maria Santissima Annunziata (Duomo di Acireale), was built between 1597 and 1618 and enlarged later. The present cathedral is a 17th-century building with a Baroque portal representing the Annunciation and a Neo-Gothic west front. Piazza Duomo is also home to the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, from the 16th-17th century and the 18th century Municipal Palace.
