Hiking 450km on the Lycian Way in Turkey

In March /April 2024 (Spring), I hiked the Lycian Way (or Likya Yolu in Turkish) from the town of Ölüdeniz (near Fethiye) to Geyikbayırı (near Antalya) in Türkiye. There are many variations of the Lycian Way, so the total distance can vary anywhere from 400km – 760km, depending on what route(s) you decide to walk. Likya Yolu passes by many greco-roman ruins and popular areas such as Butterfly Valley, Patara Ancient City, the Ancient City of Olympos and Olympos Beydagları National Park. I mostly camped in my tent on this hike, with the occasional night in a hotel. I resupplied food at supermarkets in the various towns I passed through and also ate at many restaurants and cafes along the way. I purchased bottled water at supermarkets and refilled them using the fresh water taps provided or at cafes. This hike was harder than I thought it would be. While stunningly beautiful, do not underestimate the steep inclines and loose rocky parts. The Lycian Way truly is an amazing trail to be experienced.

  1. This hike was really amazing, I did it in 2022 what an epic adventure. Now I’m currently planning for PCT in 2025, gotta love the feeling of being free enjoying nature. Thanks for the video great way to capture this amazing hike and beautiful country. I have to say Demre was my hardest section of the hike, mainly due to water shortage, as I did the hike in May….

  2. Really enjoyed the video Aaron. Great video quality – you skills as a photographer are obvious! It must have taken you ages to do all the editing too. Impressed by the sequences where you walk towards or away from the camera and of course had to return to retrieve it. That must have added substantially to your mileage!
Quite a change in character from your NZ tramps, which I often use as inspiration for my own tramps when I'm in NZ.

  3. An excellent video, thank you. I walked Fetihye to Olympus/Cirali last September and am planning on going back for part 2 this year. Your lovely footage has brought it back and given me itchy feet! Lovely to see how green it is in spring time with the flowers and blossom. Also the water springs are flowing whereas they were mostly dry in September. Thanks again 🙏

  4. Thank you for sharing your experiences on Lycian Trail! It is an awesome video. I heard it from Culture Routes Society Turkey's e-mail. I am glad that they let us know. Greetings from Turkiye.

  5. I love it! I hiked for 5 days on the Lycian Way from Fethiye to Kalkan, and I can’t wait to return and complete the entire trail. I’m a bit surprised that there were almost no people on the trail, unlike in November when I was hiking! 😍😍

  7. Hiking 450km on the Lycian Way sounds like an incredible adventure! 🏞 The mix of stunning landscapes, ancient ruins, and charming towns must have made this a truly unforgettable experience. I can imagine those steep inclines and rocky trails were tough, but it sounds like it was worth every step.

  8. Very nice! I'm gonna have 2 weeks for this trail and can't decide, which section should I do, whether the western half from Fethiye, or the eastern half from Antalya. Would you have any advice? From your video, it kinda seemed to be the part from Fethiye to Kas was a lot more populated, which is what I'd like to avoid. I want to be sleeping mostly only in tent and not have to walk through hotel resorts / crowded beaches etc…

  9. Great quality of production Aaron! Ungortunately everywhere charged or asked higher than normal prices to you. In Turkiye there is such tendencies in family shops against foreigners🙁. I recommend not to sit anywhere before talking price and always bargain from 50% lower.

  10. Thanks for the video, I have booked flights and the planning is going well. My question is could you or someone how has been there imagine doing it in 14 hiking days? If I skip the section finke-karaöz my plan would be 405 km and 16000meters of elevation.
On paper its dubbel as hard as gr 20 corsica, witch makes it a real challenge but in my head not impossible.

  11. Thanks a lot for this great video! I walked this route too last year (2024) in early March, but I bailed after a week because of heavy rain and thunderstorms and freezing temperatures on the mountains 😞 This year I will pick up where I bailed (Kalkan) and start around May 16th.😄

  12. This is such a beautiful film! Loved it! Was it hard to find water? I saw you fill up your bottle a few times, is Turkey one of those places that has a tap or spring in every town and village?

  13. Hi Aaron, great video! I have a quick question! How was the water situation? Im reading online that from the start (at the yellow sign) you need to take 5 liters of water for the first stretch? That seems like a lot? How did you manage water? I will be starting the hike march 27!

  14. Hi! Here I am again😅 Since there isnt that much info out there.. what app did you use for navigation and water sources? How did you find your info?
