Bike Touring Tajikistan’s High Pamir off the beaten path #39

Bicycle touring off the beaten track on the roof of the world. Grinding up the barely known Shakhdara Valley we face very challenging terrain, freezing temperatures and fierce winds. Eventually we make it back to the Pamir Highway, climb up to Koi-Tezek Pass at 4271m and can’t find any sleep in Alichur at 3900m.

235 km | 3470m total elevation gain | Khorog – Shakhdara Valley – Alichur

  1. Each video gets better and better Arev and Mathias. You have a way to take us right to every moment and to feel the place you are in. The cold, wind chill, road bumps, exhaustion and exhilaration as well. So well done.

  2. Having lived in communism I fail to see anything good about it. Sure there were claims of some apparent successes but really they are nothing. For example, Cuba is known to produce many and quite educated doctors. But what good is it when they don’t have access to medicine or tools to do the job. In my country doctors had to take electricity classes so they can repair lights when they stop working during operations . It was absurd . In Cuba they will treat you with herbs from the forest because they don’t have access to enough medicine. I don’t have to read 20th century history, I lived it.

  3. Hello Matias. If you have a Macbook (laptop) for editing, please give advice for protective case or sleeve used. You ride over very bumpy roads so you would know the best way to protect your Macbook. There are no bicycle tourers who have discussed this….thanks…Richard Hunt

  4. In each new video I’m always so impressed by how far you’ve both come, and not just the vast distance you’ve covered.

The route you’ve taken in this video, is exactly the route I would have taken to cross the Pamir. Words can’t express how in awe I am of your journey.

Good luck with your onward travels.

  5. You guys went up to where people are not normally found and where any problem can have much more serious consequences than it would have at a lower altitude. But thanks to your experience and preparation you were able for this challenge. Another great adventure!

  6. Matthias, wir warten auf eure Rückkehr, damit du uns den Unterschied zwischen einer high Volumen und high pressure Pump erklären kannst.

  7. As a North American living comfortably with every possible resource at hand, this really puts things into perspective; not only the two of you on bicycles, but the people of Tajikistan.

  8. Your cheeks are getting skinnier and the scenery just gets more beautiful. I've been cycling every summer the past 4 years and seeing your fantastic videos, I might follow in your footsteps and try the M41.
