✨ About Always Away:
We’re Dom and Emma! For over a decade, we’ve been traveling the world together, turning our love for adventure into a way of life. We started out backpacking through Southeast Asia, but in 2016, vanlife became our thing—partly so we could bring our pug, Percy, along for the journey.

Since then, we’ve lived out of everything from a tiny kei car camper during three months of vanlife in Japan to larger vans exploring Europe, with highlights in the Alps, Dolomites, and Germany. We’ve also spent years living in Thailand, working as teachers and digital nomads in Chiang Mai and Phayao, soaking up the culture and making it our second home.

Now, we’re switching things up with a motorbike trip through Northern Thailand, diving into new adventures and revisiting some of our favourite spots and discovering new ones along the way. Make sure to subscribe to come along for the ride!

Subscribe to follow our journey—whether it’s vanlife, motorbike travel, or life abroad, we’re excited to share it with you! 🌍🏕️

  1. Here’s a story for you! In August 2005 a plane flying from Larnaca Airport in Cyprus to Prague via Athens crashed into a mountain just outside Athens killing everyone on board. The cause of the crash was later determined to be due to a fault that led to cabin depressurization resulting in everyone on board falling unconscious and the plane continuing to fly until it ran out of fuel and crashed. Here’s the kicker – I was on that very plane on its last flight before that one and got off my flight from London to Larnaca a few hours before the doomed flight took off. It was a really weird feeling once I found out what had happened and it did change the way I looked at life from that point on. Carpe Diem became my motto and it also taught me not to sweat the small stuff and not to worry about things I can’t do anything about. Curiously enough my close shave with death has actually made me a far happier and contented person. A lot of people spend their lives worrying about things that will never happen and that they can’t do anything about if they do. The reality is that flying is the safest form of travel and you are far more likely to die in a car wreck on the way to the airport or by choking on a sandwich bought in the departure lounge before boarding your flight. Being 6ft 5” tall the main thing I worry about before getting on a plane is how much leg room I am going to have! Anyway apologies for being so serious – great pod! ❤👍

  2. I understand how you feel. I haven’t flown in 30 years and this year I plan to fly Japan this fall, but I have to take that leap of faith to come on my dream trip.

  3. We all know you made it. I haven't been on a plane since we've had kid's. A family of 5 is too expensive to fly. How long do you guys stay at a hotel/hospice each time? One night or more nights in a row? Continued safe travels to you both. My hubby rides motorcycles (Ducati and Kawasaki) so thank you for emphasizing good helmets ❤

  4. I went most of my life without plane issues, and to date I have never, ever had my luggage lost, but the last two trips I've been on have had issues with horrible storms delaying my flights, or canceling them outright. Each storm worse than the last. I'm thinking it's building to something? Only one way to find out.

  5. When I check the prices of duty free stuff against buying it normally, I find it's all super expensive. I think it's such a con! So I wouldn't worry, I don't think you're missing out!

  6. I used to love flying, but now for various reasons I dread it. I wish I could suggest something practical that could help you guys, but I'm only able to get on planes with the help of prescription anxiety meds now, so not really an option for everyone 😆

  7. Loved this episode! I'm definitely with Dom in the not wanting to watch the news because of how depressing it is!

I completely relate with Emma with the driving, it's hard being so short (5ft) as it is, let alone on a motorbike!

  8. It’s only flying into the US where it’s really dangerous these day!
I made peace with my death on one flight, in a crazy storm, we got hit by lightning and there was tornados! Not scared myself though. But the first real time I made peace with death, was the elevator accident.
