Penne, France: The Impossible Fortress!

Penne Medieval Majesty: The Spectacular Fortress in the Sky Walking Tour!

Nestled high above the Aveyron Valley, the fortress of Penne is one of France’s most breathtaking medieval sites. Built on a dramatic limestone ridge, this “impossible fortress” has stood for centuries, defying time, war, and the elements. But what makes this stronghold so unique? In this video, we’ll explore its fascinating history, stunning views, and the charming village of Penne—a true hidden gem of the Occitanie region.

🏰 A Fortress Steeped in History
Originally built in the Middle Ages, the Château de Penne played a key role during the Albigensian Crusade (1209–1229) and later, the Hundred Years’ War (1337–1453). It was a stronghold for the Cathars and later passed through the hands of powerful lords before falling into ruin. Today, thanks to an ambitious restoration project, visitors can walk through its ancient walls and imagine life as a medieval knight!

  1. My wife and I visited Penne two years ago. The fortress is slowly being restored by one man who bought it. I think he gets volunteers to help him in the summer months. The highest part of the fortress appears to hanging over a vertical cliff, and restoration looks a daunting task. The village has maintained its medieval character, and after our visit to the fortress we had lunch on a terasse overlooking the river below.
