Babaranjang – The Sumatra Coal Train

Babaranjang is the nickname for the famous coal trains operating in South Sumatra, Indonesia. The name comes from the Indonesian phrase “Bawa Bara Panjang” meaning “carrying long coal.” These trains transport coal in Southern Sumatra for export and domestic use. These coal trains are essential for Indonesiaโ€™s energy sector and are among the heaviest and longest freight trains in Southeast Asia.

I went to Sumatra to see and experience the Babaranjang and see Indonesia from the perspective no one normally sees.
