We Are Not the First Famous Visitors in this Castle! | Castle of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse

In a beautiful valley enclosed by tall cliffs lies the town of Fontaine-de-Vaucluse. Its castle is situated above. It is known for once being the summer residence of Philippe de Cabassolle, bishop of Cavaillon. He had a good friend. It’s someone you might have heard of. It is the early humanist and Renaissance poet Petrarch. Petrarch retired to Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and spent many a day with his friend in the castle. Let us take you to that place where Medieval intellectuals met and exchanged news and ideas.

  1. Aaah, just lovely. The ruins may be sparse, but some of its features are particularly thought provoking and tantalizing (specifically, the ghosts of the outworks, and some of the visible underground/rock-cut features). But as you say, the setting? Just spectacular. I wasn’t 30 seconds in to the video and i was forced to pause it and go research the town and surrounding area myself, just so I could see a bit more of it. Absolutely lovely. What a place for a cliff-top fortress, eh? My imagination goes all sorts of crazy what with conjuring up what it might have looked like in the Middle Ages and before. There are a number of particularly old, and particularly interesting settlements in that area, it would seem. Lots of very rich history there. I shall have to dig some more =] thanks guys, a pleasure as always.
