Semana Santa is a big deal in Velez-Malaga. After the big cities it is recognised as one of the most impressive in the whole of Spain. Seven Easter societies stage their processions of Malaga in Palm Sunday, parading a total of twelve shoulder-borne floats or tronos. Excitement and colour are the watchwords on this first day of Holy Week of Malaga.
In most Christian rites, Palm Sunday is celebrated by the blessing and distribution of palm branches (or the branches of other native trees), representing the palm branches that the crowd scattered before Christ as he rode into Jerusalem.
