Today, I’m back to check out the brand-new version of one of my least favourite trains: Hitachi’s Class 800 series of high-speed trains for the United Kingdom. The early versions of this train were known for their uncomfortable seats, poor lighting, and overall ride quality, so I was eager to see if this new version is any better. Join me on a journey aboard this updated train, travelling from Liverpool to London.

  1. The 80x's are mechanically a good train. The interior is entirely down to operator specification, or in the case of the original IETs – civil service specification. The 805/807 standard class seats are good. The standard class interior layout is probably as good a 'compromise' layout as you can get – 5 airlines rows to 2 windows, then 5 well aligned bays, then 5 airline rows to 2 windows again. Less decadent than perfectly aligned 2 rows to each window, but the vast majority of rows have good window views.

  2. Next time you go to the first class lounge turn right at the top of the stairs. There you will find the original signallling panel for Lime Street, since replaced. Well worth a look.

  3. Like all IETs they look cheap and flimsy and I dread to think what the crash worthiness is like and how those seats would hold up under a crash. feel far safer on a 390

  4. Simon , please , stop that nonsense . That's not a high speed train . In the UK there's only a short
high speed route , the one for the the trains that cross the Channel towards Paris . That's not an
UK train . So , definitely , the UK doesn't have high speed trains . What they have is a project to connect London – Birmingham – Manchester that is expected to be ready between 2033 / 39 . Got it ?

  5. It's so depressing that these are both 1) totally reasonable to describe as Britain's most hated high speed trains and 2) pretty much the only trains that british operators are ordering for long distance services, still, and after over a decade of ordering them

  6. I see they're STILL putting in those awful Christmas tree reservation lights, which are complete overkill, and don't make for a relaxing journey. They should be designed to light only on arrival and departure at stations, or completely re-designed. Idiotic user experience. Not friendly for some neuro diversity either. The UK has some of the best designers in the world, yet we still keep putting hideous stark colours in our train interiors, rather than relaxing, muted tones.

  7. I absolutely hate the new Avanti standard seat headrests- as a taller guy, the wings of the headrest sit right behind my shoulder blades, meaning I can’t actually put my back against the seat for support at all.

  8. Enjoyed the video – I’d be annoyed with the lack of catering to be honest. Although Avanti especially out of Liverpool have a very friendly team onboard. I’ll stick to the Pendolino I think

  9. Terrible, ridden these crap EMU’s several times in 1st class, I’d prefer an old Mk3 coach, better comfort, better ride quality, more space, we’re going backwards with this new type rolling stock, just dreadful – (I’m an ex Liverpool Lime St driver btw)

  10. GWR – Didcot to Paddington was probably one of the most uncomfortable rides I have ever had. Metal bar in the seat actually cut off blood/nerves to my legs and bounced all over the place! Really miss the HST Class 43s and the lovely carriages.

  11. I just love these kinds of videos. I will probably never ride this train or at least not in the near future. But the videos are always super interesting and comforting to watch and its interesting what kind of trains are in different parts of europe. Much love from Austria!

  12. Number one, 125 mph is not hi speed. Number two, that car doesn't look first class. Number three, the pricetag is out of the world. Number four, the catering is awful, even conceding some disruption in the supply line. I guess they don't want to upset the airlines.

  13. It annoys me seeing so many English and European trains that don't match the platforms. This is starting to appear in the US too although we haven't kept up with trains on the order seen there. I think the nasty engineers of the US rail cabal are insinuating their way into the British and continental rail business. Not naming any projects, but rail culture is dead, and people don't understand how to attract passengers, from either the service or engineering perspective. On some level it's deliberate.

  14. I find it’s mainly enthusiastis who make loud noises regarding these Hitachi trains. Lack of padding doesn’t equal an uncomfortable train. And yes the train wobbles a bit. That’s the track. Everyone gets dewy eyed about the old mk3s, but I remember them bucking around too. The thing I love with the Hitachis is the space and the performance. I just don’t find them uncomfortable and I’m 6’2” and a bit fat. And that includes standard on GWR and LNER.

  15. I'll be riding the similar bimode 805 train on Saturday, so will get the chance to compare the improvements over the earlier GWR and LNER versions, with their appalling seats in standard.
A lot of modern trains ride badly, the CAF trains have a terrible ride also, the 397 for TPE is a lovely train completely spoiled by the ride. By contrast the older 390s ride every well.

  16. One thing I'd have taken as an upgrade is greater luggage storage. Every time I've traveled on one of these things on a weekend or during holiday seasons there's been suitcases and bags bulging out of seats and blocking the aisles. It's as if whoever designed the damn things never thought that travelers might actually be carrying baggage with them.

  17. I’ve traveled from London to Edinburgh the 4-5 hour journey LNER MK4 coach standard seats became slightly uncomfortable. MK4 1st class lovely leather seats very comfortable.
The MK3 standard coach seats are also still comfortable for this duration.
I rode the LNER Azuma for 1 hour and the seat was crippling. Not yet tried first class. I would not attempt to ride LNER azuma in standard class from London to Edinburgh.

  19. No-one appears to be mentioning that the Liverpool Lime Street – London Euston services have technically been downgraded. Prior to getting these Class 807 trains on the route, a Class 390 would operate the services – sometimes a 9 car, but more likely to be an 11 car trainset on the once hourly service. The last time I used the service, it took 2hrs 3mins to do the journey. Now Avanti have put these 7 car units on which are only capable of 110mph due to no tilting mechanism and the fact they've added further stops into the journey means it has increased the timings by approx 20-22 minutes meaning we are nearly back to where the journey times where when Virgin took over the franchise at 2hrs 40mins – some current services take longer than the 2hr 40 min journey time, putting the Liverpool London Service back to similar timings when BR/ Intercity ran 125/225 train sets which took upwards of 3 hrs to complete the journey. Another AH move is the fact that when Avanti took over the service from Virgin in 2019, both operators made out the city was 'underserved' and would be looking to schedule twice hourly services between Liverpool and London, but 6 years on, we're still we are only at the single train an hour when in compariosn, Manchester has four direct services per hour, which AFAIK has been increased from three when Virgin were the franchise owner. And to give us a further kick in the nuts, the prices for these services are absolutely ridiculous. It's now cheaper for me to drive to London and back than take the train and in some cases can be slightly quicker if making connections within London to other destinations like I normally do with the family.

  20. Inlove England but for a developped country, there are looking far in the past…. The train is new but actually if there wasn't the wireless charger, i would think it's 15years old, at least… Also having a wobbling on one of the major connections in England is really a shame … And for the finish, I'm sorry but high speed train is above 200 km/h, under is just a normal new train on some good tracks…
Having this type of service for one of the major connections in England is really a shame, England invented the train, Thatcher tried to kill it…

  21. 鉄道の品質は①線路、②運行システム、③車両、だものなあ。鉄道の歴史が長いイギリスは①のコストが無駄に高くなるのがつらい所。
