Vietnam is considered to be one of the cheapest country in the world to live and you can definitely live here on a really low budget, but what does it actually cost to live well and experience some of the luxuries in 2025?

Today I am doing a monthly expenses budget breakdown of exactly what I spent as a solo traveler and backpacker teaching English in 2019 compared to what I spend as a family of 4 living in Vietnam in 2025. So…

  1. I live in Hanoi (Vinhomes Ocean Park) and the cost seems to be a little bit cheaper than HCMC. Iโ€™m married to a Vietnamese woman who knows where to shop cheaper than I would be able to pay. We spend around $800 – $1200 a month depending on how much we eat out. Great video with spot on prices.

  2. Dude, all I care about is that the locals there continue to treat you well. I'd be so ashamed if my people lose their hospitality. On the other hand, I wish there were as much of that hospitality back here in the US. I dread taking a trip to a southern state to only run into cars with a confederate flag hanging in the back, or get a cold shoulder the moment I step into a restaurant.

  3. I donโ€™t know what you spend your money on, but it sure does not cost $3000 for a family of 4 in Vietnam. That is like USA price. I have been going to Vietnam 1-2 times a year since 2015.

  4. I 've to Vietnam in February and it's more expensive than all these videos say… anyway I didn't like it so much traffic ,noise and pollution, not healthy at all. But the food is very good if you go to the good places.

  5. I'm married to a national and living down south in one of the provinces. Two children – 1 studying in HCMC (staying with family with our support), and the other going to a local private school + private english tuition. We own our own house, and outgoing is US$700 a month. I am the only expat in a moderate sized super friendly community 8 miles from a major provincial city. Y'all can keep your rat race. I'm staying amongst the slow-paced Mekong Delta.

  6. Thanks for another great video. On another note, I didn't see food listed on your "Solo" list, just beer and coffee. Was that meant to represent the entire food cost, or was the food just left out? Also, what about smaller towns and cities outside of Ho Chi Minh City? Will you be discussing those in the future?

  7. I really like your honest costs. I think is easy. If you want a western home, western food is same or more expensive. If you accept Vietnamese life is much cheaper as at home.

  8. I think a more accurate title should be "how much does it cost a family of 4 to live a high end North American lifestyle in 2025 in Vietnam".
You are presenting your evolutionay costs over 6yrs, now being a family of 4 and spending large.
That is not the cost of living well in Vietnam, that is the cost of YOUR DEFINITION of living well. IMO you are splurging, not necesarily living well.
Anyway, now I think you're living on 2000, do I remember correctly?
Just be happy you don't live in Toronto or Vancouver…or in Canada for that matter.
Enjoy your life in Vietnam! We'll be joining soon๐Ÿ˜Š

  9. You were single back then, and you now have 2 kids. In addition to the yearly inflation, things of course are not the same, but the cost of living in Vietnam, particularly Ho Chi Minh City is still in my opinion, quite affordable. Your dollar can stretch further in Vietnam. Just got back to America from Vietnam 2 months ago, I totally love it there. A spacious studio apartment with a balcony, in D.3 would usually cost me about $750/month, but I told the manager I would live there for 3-6 months, the rent went down to $500/month, including utilities and internet services. Utility bills and internet services in America alone cost me roughly $500/month. Go to local Vietnamese supermarkets like Co.opmart where everything is quite affordable. Eat what the locals eat, and do not go to fancy restaurants every day. A tasty banh mi would cost me just 1 buck, a bowl of delicious pho was a little over 2 bucks. An amazing sizzling cake with a heap of herbs and vegetables would cost me less than 2 bucks! We're talking about yummy $1-2 street food in Vietnam.

  10. Great vid! Not to be picky, but I had hoped you would have put realistic estimates for comfortable cost of living for both solo persons and couples. Hopefully in the near future? Thanks again!

  11. I'm an Australian living at Duong Dong on the island of Phu Quoc. I stay at a beautiful resort in a fully serviced double room, with everything I need nearby. I am single and don't go night clubbing, but smoke and drink. I am living quite comfortably on 500000dong/day.(20usd 30aud). No air pollution, no traffic, no crowds, free buses and plenty of seafood. I could live even cheaper if necessary but I like to pamper myself a bit.

  12. Well, say thank you to westerner youtubers that keep making "da nang world's cheapest city" *** THOSE SLIM BAGS WOULDN'T STOP, HORDES OF EXPATS DRIVING UP THE PRICE.

  13. Finally a realistic video about living a family life in SE Asia for longterm. Back in 2019 my employer asked me to move to either HCM Vietnam, Bangkok Thailand or Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, where the company had its regional APAC HQ. We visited all 3 cities and imagined living there with our main requirements being: Good healthcare, good infrastructure, safe, clean, developed but still the real deal of SE Asia and at reasonable costs (so we could save). My heart said HCM (district 7 indeed), our rationale said Kuala Lumpur. And no, it is not on a shoestring of a couple of hundred dollars a month, it is realistically how we would live if we would be still in our home countries (Netherlands and Singapore). Why would I ride a scooter, if back home I would drive a German SUV or sedan? Why would I rent a one bedroom cheap condo, if at home we would live in a house with a garden? When you raise a family, you're no longer the backpacker, things develop and so does the lifestyle. Long story short, a high level job with a high pay and high costs, but in the beautiful SE Asian region. You get what you pay for.
