Are Spanish Oranges Actually Sweet?
This is me secretly picking an orange off the tree in Spain. Why secretly? Because, well, it’s not exactly legal. My god. Okay. Spain is well known for their oranges. And as an Eastern European who only saw apples on trees, I couldn’t help myself but wonder, what does an orange taste like picked from a tree? How difficult can it be to get an orange straight from a branch? Will I satisfy my curiosity after making the long journey across Europe? So, the other day while grocery shopping, I was stuck at the fruit section trying to pick something suitable from the selection of fruit and everything just looked extremely sad or plastic or just super tasteless. So, this is why I am about to book some flights to Spain and go by myself to hopefully obtain a fresh from a tree orange. Okay, I am packed. It is officially 10 midnight. I have to wake up before 6:00 a.m. I’m going to try to get as much sleep as possible. So, let’s go. It’s way too early for this. Monset ready to go. I really wonder actually now how much this trip is going to cost me. A very good question indeed. How much does it cost to go to Spain to get a fresh orange? But now, please do enjoy my footage as I make my way through the amazing airport. I always wanted to film that. I don’t know what’s wrong with my face, but strangers just love talking to me. So, I did indeed make a new friend on the flight. And this is this older Jen here that you can see, who is a professor at one of London’s universities. And we had a very nice chat. And once we landed, we had some wine together and a nice conversation, which was very, very nice. And after that, I headed to the center of Malaga to look for oranges. I have arrived in the beautiful city of Malaga. The weather is not ideal. I just need to find a way now to uh successfully get to my Airbnb and successfully check in. It is extremely extremely weird what has just happened. I couldn’t get into the building. I have messaged the the the phone number to the host and they haven’t been replying and responding and there was no safe box for me to get the key out to get into the actual building. I just stood there waiting for the land lady to reply and then this couple shows up and I felt like, oh, they’re probably trying to get into the Airbnb as well, but it seems like they had some updated instructions on how to actually get in there. Then we just got in and I just like got into my room, but the problem is I still don’t know how to get back in here once I leave. I tried to have a little nap. I was hoping I will get a message back from the host in the meantime. They have only just messaged me back now. And they have sent me the details how to get in. And it turns out in that message that the check-in time is at 4:00 p.m. and not at 2:00 p.m. like it says on the website of Airbnb. I probably wasn’t supposed to be here for the past hour and a half. Problem sorted. I will just go and explore the city now. I am starving. I haven’t eaten anything since my meal in Tesco. To my surprise, it wasn’t long before I saw my first orange tree just outside my Airbnb. This is literally the first time I have seen an orange growing on an actual tree. And I feel so excited like a kid for some reason. And hopefully it wasn’t the last orange I saw. As I’ve been exploring the city, I was on the lookout for some more orange trees to potentially be the source of my fruit. Okay, so far I have made it to the beach. I did not see any orange trees there. So, I decided to climb this mountain to get a way better view. Views were pretty so pretty. I got to the top of the mountain and found the castle. Okay, so I climbed the top of the castle and the castle closed at uh 6:00 p.m. I did not see the castle, neither orange trees. So, I went back down and after finding some ancient ruins, it was time to grab that food. I don’t know why, but I feel anxious about going into a place where I know they don’t speak good English and trying to order some tapas food. But let’s try. I tried and it worked out really well. The food in Spain is absolutely amazing. Though, as I was enjoying myself, that is so good. I’ve realized how distracted I got from my real goal, I needed to focus on my mission. Morning. Okay, it was seriously time to get serious. I started properly looking for some orange trees, but none of them were an easy target. And by the time I realized I was sightseeing Picasso Museum, did you know that he was born in Malaga? Anyway, in the museum, I have finally figured it all out. I had a plan. From the sounds of it, I might not be doing something exactly legal, but I don’t think it’s also extremely illegal. And here is the biggest problem. Is it allowed to pick an orange from a random tree in Malaga? No. Picking an orange from a random tree in Malaga or anywhere in Spain is generally not allowed unless you have permission. This meant that any orange trees I’ve seen on the streets were out of the picture apart from one my Airbnb orange tree because the orange tree is on the property of the Airbnb that I am renting. So I could do assumed permission from the owner to pick an orange. Instead of assuming I ended up asking for permission, but it seems like the landlord himself is quite unsure. I will just wait till it gets late in the night so everyone goes to bed and everyone sleeps and no one sees my little mischievous act and I’m gonna go quickly out and get my orange. I just don’t get why I’m so stressed about it. Probably because I’m doing something not exactly legal. Okay, I am doing it. [Music] I still everyone in Yeah. My god. Okay. We did it, guys. We did it. I’ve got the orange. Okay, now the most crucial part of this story. Will this orange actually live up to my expectations? First thing I can say is that it smells amazing. It smells like an orange. The skin comes off so so easily. Such a strong scent. This is amazing [Music] [Applause] already. Okay, let me just bite in and let’s see. [Music] It’s not sweet at all. It’s actually bitter. So, I’m not sure if this orange is ready to be eaten or should orange be so bitter or is this orange just or this species of orange is not to be eaten like this? I’m not vibing with this. In my most brutal opinion, this was so not worth it. [Music] [Applause] [Music]
I traveled from London to Spain, across Europe, just to pick and taste a fresh orange straight from the tree—and yes, I may have done it a little… secretly. Spain is world-famous for its oranges, and after staring at lifeless, flavorless fruit in a supermarket back home, I had one question: what does a real Spanish orange, picked by hand right off the branch, actually taste like?
In this travel vlog, I take you behind the scenes of my spontaneous journey across Europe, from booking a last-minute flight to wandering through Spanish city of Malaga in search of the perfect orange. It’s a food adventure, a cultural experience, and a bit of a rule-breaking moment all rolled into one.
This video is for anyone who wants to be entertained a bit by my funny search for the perfect orange.
