Did you know that a tiny village in Provence has a direct connection to the Principality of Monaco? And that behind its walls once fought dukes, cardinals, and entire armies? Today I’ll show you Les Baux de Provence a town where history comes alive in every stone. Actually, I could host a show about perfume, the filming of which is scheduled for 2025. Les Baux is not only about history — around every corner you’ll find… The town lives on tourism, so on holidays and weekends, parking is paid. In general, in France most city parking is free on Sundays and holidays. Since it’s a tourist town, the parking is expensive. One hour of parking costs 5 euros. 11 hours – 35 euros. Les Baux hides among the rocks of Provence. It feels like time has stopped here, but behind the ancient facades, life is bustling. And here is the first clue about the connection to Monaco — a sign at the town entrance. This won’t just be a tour — it’s my personal view of the town. What surprised me, how I feel, and maybe it will inspire you too. We’re now at the Prince of Monaco Square. The thing is, Les Baux has a very close connection to Monaco. At the time, France was strengthening its alliance with Monaco to weaken Spain’s influence on the Mediterranean region. And King Louis XIII granted the title of Marquis of Les Baux as a gift to the Grimaldis, the princely family of Monaco. And to this day, the heir to the Monegasque throne officially holds the title Marquis of Les Baux. The history of Les Baux continues on Monaco’s red carpets. The lands of Les Baux no longer belong to the Principality of Monaco, but the tradition has been preserved for almost 400 years. Let’s continue through the town, it’s very crowded today. Today, Les Baux is not just about history, around every corner you’ll find souvenir shops, stores selling olive oil, Provençal wines, and jewelry. All products from Provence are natural, high-quality, and made by local producers. You want to try everything and buy it all — which I did. Tasting is at every step. Shall we go on? Narrow streets — very atmospheric, as if the knights just left and we’re here wandering… We’re buying sausage that won a gold medal at the World Sausage Competition, which had participants from 24 countries. And this sausage took first place — we’re buying it now. To be honest, I love sweets. Now let’s try what we bought — some caramel and dragées. Honestly, dark chocolate is always a win. I love dark chocolate. Do you like dark chocolate? 😀 Feels like we just arrived, took a short walk, and already we’re tired — time for a break. Let’s grab a drink. Many interesting films and projects have been shot in Les Baux de Provence and its surroundings, such as “Happy is he like Ulysses” with our beloved Fernandel, and also “Jean Valjean”, which is scheduled to film in 2025. Les Baux has another attraction — the Carrière des Lumières. A unique multimedia art space, located in former quarries at the foot of the town, and one of the most impressive cultural sites in France. Here, every stone breathes history. It’s like you switch off your inner phone and just enjoy the moment. This is Hôtel de Manville, built in 1571. And this used to be a torture chamber 😀 Air freshener for the car or wherever else with the scent of Provence. Lavender smells so nice, I really love lavender. This one’s also floral, but hard to tell what exactly. Ah, this one’s rose. That’s easy to tell. Definitely a rose note. Honestly, I could host a show about perfumes. Let’s launch a new segment on the channel: “Guess the note by the scent.” Vanilla. Fleur de cerisier. Lavender. Oui. Lavande, c’est ma préférée. It’s amazing how unhurried people are here. Smells amazing. We’ve entered the grounds of the castle ruins. Entrance costs 10 euros. The castle sits at the highest point in town. From here, you get breathtaking views of Provence. We’ve walked around the town a bit and we’re already pretty tired. It’s so hot today— we didn’t expect it to be this hot. You can feel that it’s summer. By the 13th century, Les Baux had become a center of real political power in the region. They controlled 79 villages and around 3,000 people in population. That was a lot for that time. In the 17th century, the town became so powerful that Cardinal Richelieu, fearing its influence, ordered the castle destroyed. The walls fell, but the spirit of Les Baux lived on. Les Baux isn’t just a point on the map— it’s a state of being. And I’m glad I got to share it with you.
