The origin of the name Capri is uncertain. It may come from the Ancient Greek word “kápros,” meaning “wild boar,” as early Greek colonists called the island Kapreai. Fossils of wild boars have been found on the island. Alternatively, it is believed that the island got its name from the Latin “capreae,” meaning “goats,” and it is said that the Romans referred to Capri as “goat island.
