Finally the time has come. This mountain pass has been on my list for a long time. Today we drive the highest asphalt mountain road in Europe, the Col de l’Iseran. In this video we compare how the different tours go and whether this pass road is not only the highest but also the most beautiful. So let’s get going. We start today’s tour here in the well-known winter sports resort of Val d’Isère at 1,850 meters above sea level and there is really something going on here in winter. The “Escape Killy” ski area with 300 kilometers of slopes, connected to the Tignes ski resort. Ski World Cup races that take place on one of the steepest race tracks in the world, namely here at the Face de Belvarde. It’s really awesome what’s going on here. But you can see that there are also good atmospheres in summer. Many people come here to hike or mountain bike. You can also start on the Col de l’Iseran with your racing bike, which is what we’re doing today. But there are different ways to drive this pass and you can also start deeper down in the valley. All the facts that are there are now available as I drive the first few meters. Let’s go. So now he’s finally waiting for us. The superlatives of the mountain passes in the Alps. In this video we will cycle up to an incredible 2770 meters and cross various climate zones including snow. But first let’s get to the facts: There is a route to the Col de l’Iseran. Two routes: One from Lanzleburg with 33 kilometers and 1,371 meters in altitude, which is considered a more relaxed climb and is not quite as spectacular in terms of scenery. And today’s route, which begins at the foot in Saint-Maurice Castle and flows over 44 kilometers with an altitude of 1,866 meters to the top. But this ramp has a catch, which is why we only start in the middle of the climb in the ski resort. It leads from the valley to Val d’Isere over a busy road with some tunnels and many construction sites. If you have the chance, take advantage of off-peak times or transport to Valdisea and then start the climb. That’s what we’re doing now and fighting our way up into the high mountains. You can now see how this works. Let’s go. So now we’re fully on this road. This pass was opened in 1937. I always find it unbelievable what people thought: “Yes, come on, we definitely have to build an asphalt road here over the Alps. And what makes the pass special is what you can see right here: the weather conditions can change very quickly. We are high in the Alps up there and you can see that there is a black cloud hanging here on the left, it is somehow nice and sunny on the right and the Tour de France even had to be stopped once in the summer on the way up here because there was snowfall. So it can happen very quickly. That means, Arm yourself, take a rain jacket with you, take everything you need to brave different weather conditions. Now here’s a note about the clothing Now there is a small passage downhill and then up again. We have now packed half of the tour and take a look at the scenery we are traveling in. Here we are at the height of the ski area. The ski lifts go up there. Crazy, 2000 meters high. There is real skiing here in winter. And what do you need for a ski area? Well, you need cold. We notice that. It has become significantly colder and we need precipitation and you may be seeing that right now as the clouds move in here. Simply awesome. So the weather changes really quickly. I just said it. Let’s see what it looks like above. Come with me. And as we pedal up here, some cyclists come towards us. It could be that they drive the Route de Grand Alpes. A route that is high on my list. It runs 700 kilometers from Lake Gänfersee to Nitzar over 17 well-known Alpine passes, including the Col de Galibier and the Col de Lyseran. The Mont Ventoux we drove was significantly steeper and then the heat at the top. Not comparable in terms of the effort and hardness of the pass. And Alpes d’Huyès? Well, you drive into a mountain village and drive out again. Here you have the opportunity to go up and down two ramps. This is of course another special situation. Col de Tesserault, in this case, is rather easier to drive, not quite as steep and a high alpine landscape that then changes. As we have already described, we would rather avoid the street at the bottom right now. It took us three hours to produce. You’ve seen it: aerial photos, cameras, angles, etc., etc. Pure travel time. Vor uns liegen knapp 20 Kilometer, gespickt mit rund 1.000 Höhenmetern. Die durchschnittliche Steigung beträgt etwa 5 bis 6 %, mit maximalen Passagen um die 8 % – technisch nicht extrem, aber auf über 2.700 Metern Höhe spürbar fordernd. Der Col de l’Iseran ist mit 2.764 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel der höchste asphaltierte Straßenpass der Alpen – ein echtes Muss für alle, die alpine Radabenteuer lieben.
